Fine, so you buy $50 the first time and then $45 for each 4 month stretch after that and you'd never go below that $12 buffer.

Just phoned cust serv. Re the upcoming data plan, their best guess for an announcement is "sometime in July".

Since my current topup exxpires on the 6th, will prob go with a $25 topup and see if SO is still a good deal.

LOLWUT. The service will be retired on June 30th and their make an announcement some time in July?

Anyone who has activated their next 30 days of service within the last few days will have no service at all at the beginning of July, and an annoucement will follow shortly after that?

As usual, most CSRs don't have a clue.

Disappointing, I would pay $10 for 100MB, I really do not see any other companies with an equivalent deal.

The "information" I received from CS was that UMB would simply be terminated and stop working at the end of June, regardless of the number of UMB days left on your per-month amount. I commented that this didn't sound either ethical or fair, aside from any legal issues, but the reply to that was that since
S.O. is a "no contract" service, with monthly add-on packages, they would just be cutting off UMB June 30th.

I'm tempted to call back and as a different C.S. rep what their interpretation is regarding the termination of USB, i.e. does it chop off on June 30th, or is the last 30-day cycle beginning in June and ending for good 30 days later.

The reply should be interesting, especially if it contradicts the earlier information. Right now it sounds like they haven't told the troops yet.

If they _do_ go to offering a new type of monthly data package, one would hope that it will be a lot more full-featured and with fewer blocked ports than UMB, so that it would be more friendly to (for instance) phone running various versions of the Android OS.

S.O. is still a very good choice for my voice phone needs, but it'll be curious to see how they actually handle the end of UMB. Data on my phone is not really a big issue, but if good data service is available at a competitive price I' probably use it. Still can't beat Speakout for occasional use phones, like my 87-year-old mother, for for an emergency backup. I've yet to have any coverage problems with S.O. – it just works. This is quite unlike my experiences when I had accounts with Telus and Bell. I haven't tried any of Wind, Kodo, PetroCan, etc., although I did have a relative signed up month-to-month on Virgin Mobile. That worked OK for them, but they were staying pretty close to home.

Intersting times….

Just called a CR myself. She said they have just received a notice internally today saying that UMB has changed. But not what it is changed to. She was very nice and understandable. Her recommendation was to check back later in the month for any updates on this. She also stated that you will not loose your balance so if you renewed today it will expire in 30 days not at the end of June. And then she went on to say if you want the maximum beyond the june 30 date simply cancel your browsing on the 29 and then renew it.

Well they are calling it "data plan" rather than "browsing" so there is room for optimism.

Pretty disappointed in this. Hopefully they'll come out with something realistic and better than what the big boys offer. $10 for 100 Mb of data totally sucks especially when you see what most of the world is paying for cell service. 100Mb is nothing these days when a simple web page on a newspaper site is 3Mb. I just knew that all these "testers" were going to kill this thing.

SO is not cheap for voice so unless their data plan is decent I'll likely be moving elsewhere once I burn off my recently loaded up SIM cards. Bummer.

Exactly. $10 for 100MB is not a deal.

I don't think that they would have a data plan that would be generous enough to make if fiscally viable to circumvent traditional voice calls.

The consumer board just came out with new rules, so I think rogers is going to crack down on speakout and make them charge $10/100mb as well.

By the way I just checked today, if your on petro canada mobility and you have problems accessing the internet, delete the apn on your iphone or android. They changed it so it no longer requires an apn. not sure about speakout though. PORTS ARE STILL BLOCKED THOUGH.

?????

I wonder if there will be a blackout period starting June 30 where we will all get no blocked ports like the last time...

Since they cannot have DATA and PROXY for the 29 days it will be a free for all. And since Petr uses it also it will be an even bigger free for all!

I just tried what you suggested here and it does not work for me. It only works if I have a valid APN with the proxy settings.

I was starting to wonder when SO would post an update about their new Data plan - considering UMB would be depreciated at the end of this month, I figured they couldn't wait any longer than end of this week.

And sure enough, there's an update! Just not the kind of update we were waiting for:

We regret to notify users that the Data services will be delayed.

The good news is that Browse Feature will continue in its current format until Data service begins later this year.

We apologize to the users who have been patiently waiting for Data Services.

Once we have confirmed the Data launch dates, we will update the website.

Later this year... booo! I was really hoping for news this summer. Ah well! I've lived a year without any data, I can last another few months or however long it takes.

Well, at least now all the people who purchased $100 top-ups to use with UMB will be able to use up some of their balance instead of complaining about being ripped off by the evil corporations.

I'm sure it's delayed because they aren't done tweaking the data plan and so people can use up their money on UMB. If they don't get the data plan just right and make it competitive, people will leave SpeakOut in droves.

If they offer something ridiculous like $20/gb, then I want the voice rates to follow suit. Something like 10c/min sounds about right.

But I think that they will offer $15/150mb. It's a number similar to the $15/2500 text message bundle.

At $15 for 150mb, it will be way too much for most normal people who do not use their cell phones for mapping/music/video on the go, and not enough for the heavy users.

So most people will stay with the $15 data, and use only 50-125mb/month.
