I wish it was true pay as you go data

Pay $10 for 100 megs, valid for xx amount of days.

Not $10 A MONTH for 100 megs, that isn't PAY AS YOU GO, that's a monthly data plan Speakout!

Totally agree!! It should be pay as you go data. Very disappointed here, but SpeakOut still has to do what Rogers says.

Agree completely. We went from unlimited browsing monthly plan to monthly data plan. Right now its 100MB browsing for me because I can't get anything else to work with data.
New and improved, my ****

Is it possible to get the $10 data ONLY without anything else? I want to use it with the Fongo app.

If you don't take calls or make calls normally or text etc. there is no charge for the pay as you go.

By the way, should we upgrade to IOS 7? We are still on IOS 6 and have lots of stories that their batteries didn't last long since they upgrade to IOS 7. Once again thanks.

IOS 7 works just fine on my iphone 4s; just turn on reduce motion and high contrast as the fancy animations tend to use more CPU.

I am reluctant to upgrade my wife's iphone 4 though as there have been more reported issues with ios7 on iphone 4.

Has anyone tried the new plan with Android phone?

Do apps now have access to data network without having to root phone and use a proxy?

I only used/tried a few things with wifi. Now they work with wifi off and data selected.
Basic Android phone no rooting, etc.

Disappointing but not surprising. Likely going to go elsewhere, .10 per meg overage is too much, I thought I saw a monthly data only plan at Robbers that was .05 per meg overage with a gig a month plan? Will be looking elsewhere once I burn the money off the SIMs we currently have. I really only need data for 5 months during summer so have to see what else is available that is not Bhell, I can't live with myself if I give any money to Bhell.

UMB to continue to be available until end of Dec 2013

I hadn't seen this reported by others so I'm letting everybody know.

I spoke to an agent yesterday because I got the same message as others have reported, that I could not subscribe to the new data plan because I have a conflicting plan (or words to that effect). He advised me that my plan had been renewed on Oct 1 (instead of the 7th of the month as it has been previously). He also said that it would be auto renewed on Nov 1 and Dec 1 and therefore, if I didn't call them to cancel it, my UMB add-on would remain in service until Jan 1, 2014.

I view this as good news. If you have your phone set up so that it does everything you want now (rooted or whatever), everything will continue to work as is for another 3 months with a "fair usage" data limit of 1000 MB instead of the newly imposed 100 MB limit for $10. Lots of time to investigate alternatives and make other arrangements.
Hope this is useful.

Thanks for the info wmccrack. What happens to our UMB plan then if we don't cancel by Jan. 1, 2014? Will it automatically be converted to another plan or will it just be cancelled on its own?

Disappointing indeed. They should have set an amount, then you have 365 days to use that amount, not 30 days. Not going to get data now. What a let down. Oh well.

For $10/100mb is really expensive for me when I really only NEED maybe 1-2mb a month.

Wind Mobile is the move with unlimited incoming voice/text, 1c/min outgoing callback service, unlimited text messaging $5/month.

Wind is a good option - possibly the best - IF your in their coverage area. I'm not.

Also - Wind's "unlimited" is good for ~ 10GB - then they'll "dial-down" your speed to a mere 30kb/s

actually the speed has been changed back to 240kbit per sec = 30kb/s so it's pretty much useless now

Probably just as fast as before. Why would you care about the speed? Is it a feature to zip though your monthly quota in 10 minutes instead of 15 minutes?

I care and I think most people care. Pages are now very slow to load and this is a problem. I agree with redjersey that the speed is now about 0.25Mb/s download which is far slower than previously.

Oddly Speedtest cannot measure the upload speed as it freezes during that test after a second or so. They have probably imposed a cap on the size of uploads. Small uploads are necessary for the phone to specify what website and is wanted and to interact with the page. So if the cap is large enough this may not be a problem. Just odd.

So: Same question as samsung23. Has anyone actually measured the speed of the new plan or know what Speakout claims it to be?

Benchmarks would be useless though. Speed of the network depends on how many people are using the cell site. I never had speed issues in Halifax. I suspect people in Toronto and the like would have occasional speed problems depending on network utilization. So how can you benchmark that?

don't bother to switch to petro canada, as their umb will be cancelled very, very soon and I bet their upcoming data plans will be very similar to speakout.

10gb is alot for mobile, also I don't have to worry about the extra charge. The only problem is you have to add $8/mo for voicemail which sucks.
