2G and 3G have NOTHING to do with voice!!!! completely different radios and completely different frequencies. Your bars indicate your signal strength for the voice radio.

If that be the case, how come I could not make calls when Speakout switched to 3G? I could make them on 2G, but could not make them with the phone on 3G.

It would seem that rogers has been removing some filtering that they've had on their systems.

- they removed IMEI filtering and now iPhone 3g works on speakout

- they removed data type filtering and now 3g is accessible on speakout (the loss of voice while connected via 3g was obviously an overlooked filter as it was corrected very quickly)

And if you want proof that voice is not related to 2g and 3g just turn off both of those and see that you can still make calls just fine.

The 3G reception will always be better because if you lose the signal, it falls back to 2g if available. On a 2g network, as soon as you lose a signal, the call drops.

Thanks Andrew but you didn't really answer my questions.

Just because 3G reception will always be better doesn't automatically mean a stronger signal is being sent and received from/to the phone.

Are you saying that 3G is sending stronger signals than 2G to the phone?

I'm not sure whether 2G or 3G has a stronger signal. What I'm saying is Rogers 3G network is more encompassing. If you hit a dead area, your phone should automatically revert to 2G if it is available. It wouldn't make any sense to turn off 3G with the notion that the 2G signal may be stronger because your phone will do that anyway. As far as my real world experience goes, I've found that my signal has been more consistent on my train ride which goes through some pretty dodgy areas, since Speakout went to 3G.

just tried podcast downloading speed is like on wifi.

Noticed the phone is now switching to 3.5G (instead of staying in 3g), aka HSDPA, during podcast downloads. Download speed does not seem all that different than 3g.

OK thanks for that Andrew.
