For all you smartphone users out there, Speakout has at some point changed their data system. One user in Vancouver and myself in Toronto have confirmed that we can access the internet via 3G on speakout.

What does this mean?
- faster browsing
- internet video is playable (You tube seems like it may be blocked)
- App store is now very usable (iPhone users)
- mms now works

Only downside is that you cannot make outgoing calls whilst on 3G. You can however toggle 3G off and make calls on 2G, and you can receive calls on 3G.

Not sure why this happened or how long it will last, but its pretty good right now.

Until this is confirmed by the official site as 3G is across the board, I changed the title. Until then, they are still officially a 2G carrier.

I have had 3G access here in Halifax for some time. It still mostly defaults to 2G though. But even at 3G, the speeds are not much better than 2G. I assume Rogers allows 3G as needed, but is able to throttle the speed to 2G speed in any case.

Well, this morning I streamed 3.5 minutes of video on CNN. I think you will agree that is not 2g speeds. Also, previous to today, an iPhone would not even function with 3G enabled, so something has definitely changed.

I agree with you , but until we hear confirmation from someone on the official site, SpeakOut is still a 2G service.

I agree, could be Rogers shuffling stuff around temporarily. Could be back to normal tomorrow. Don't see any other reason why they would assign 3G service to speakout, who don't have 3G phones or offer 3G service.

Bah, still slow as mud here in Halifax! I suppose I can only say enjoy the 3G while you can, and hope the Rogers techs in your area do not find out about it too soon!

I was wondering if it has something to do with network congestion in large cities. My data connection wouldn't slow down in downtown Toronto during peak hours, it would come to a complete stop. As it wouldn't make any sense for Rogers to strengthen their EDGE infrastructure, the only solution would be to use their 3G network for overflow. However, since theoretically none of Speakouts phones are 3G capable, that doesn't make any sense. Could Rogers have opened the 3G door simply to identify Speakout users who are illegally using smartphones? Possibly, but if they were concerned about that, why would they have released all the iphone 3G blocked IMEI numbers a few weeks back? Doesn't make sense either. My best guess is that Speakout is gearing up to be the first official budget smartphone provider in Canada. They pretty much already are, the only thing standing in their way is a very laughable EDGE network, especially in Toronto.

Whatever the reason, something is definitely up.

As of this morning 3G is still up and running fine. They have however once again blocked the ability to download apps from the app store.

Hey everyone,

For the smartphone users out there, you have probably noticed that the 3G network is up now. I am able to call/receive phone calls & browse the internet all on the 3G network!!!

Although this is great news a part of me is a bit skeptical that perhaps somehow SpeakOut or Rogers foir that matter will start to detect all the non branded phones & we may have some difficulties further down the road. I hope this doesn't happen but for now I'm going to remain optimistic & welcome the upgrade.

Do we need to make any changes to our data profiles i.e. do we still use goam? I can't get mms to work on my iPhone 3G.

MMS doesn't work. I had thought that it was working, as the message seemed to go through, but the recipient never received it.

Only downside is that you cannot make outgoing calls whilst on 3G. You can however toggle 3G off and make calls on 2G, and you can receive calls on 3G.

I found out (in another thread) that I can't make outgoing calls.
I was simply trying to connect to Speakout to check my balance etc.

I turned off 3G and was then able to make the calls.

I have a question about 2G vs. 3G.
Which of the two services will result in a stronger signal being sent and received from/to the phone?
Let's assume the phone and the tower are at the same distance when the 2G and 3G calls are made.

Further to this question, I have heard that if reception is poor in an area, a phone will work extra hard to try to pull reception to the phone, is this correct and if so how does it square up with the above question?
TIA

The 3G reception will always be better because if you lose the signal, it falls back to 2g if available. On a 2g network, as soon as you lose a signal, the call drops.
