also, how is the data speed compared to if you were to have a normal data plan with say rogers, or telus for example. is it much slower to load webpages and stuff?

not much slower. the network is the same. Just that it goes through another proxy layer so there is some overhead but not much slower.
This is no different than a typical corporate environment where all external access must go through proxy.

Actually, I have found that SO data is actually faster than regular Rogers data in some cases. In tests conducted with a Mobile Speed Test, the SO enabled iphone consistently had better data rates than the Rogers iPhone. Tests conducted during business hours in downtown T.O.

I've just
1 activated (on the SO website)
2 trimmed, and
3 inserted a new SO sim in my iphone 4s,
It's still saying "No Sim".
Based on other posts in this page, I assume I still need to:
4 plug my phone in to my mac and create a profile with SO using the iPhone Configuration Utility
If this works, will I then be able to browse using my iphone?
or do I still need to buy an SO Voucher to browse?

I can't even get the phone set up.
The trimmed/cut sim card is in, I've created a speakout wireless configuration profile in iPhone Config Utility, my phone is detected, but it's not installing the configuration when I hit 'install'.
Not sure what to do.

in the top field, my iphone says "no SIM" and below: "Activation Failed... Please insert a SIM card"

1. it doesn't like your SIM
2. your phone doesn't seem to be activated.
it has nothing to do with APN, you have to get the SIM working first.

Could it be the SIM is misaligned, even by just a bit? I heard of some people who trim their own SIM cards, and misalign the contacts with the iPhone.

hmm not impossible. do you have a suggestion for where I might go to have this done "professionally"?

I bought a clipper on ebay for 2 bucks or so.
If your phone is not activated, there isn't much you can check. What I have done is to have someone activate it for me. Then I can check if the phone can read the SIM(if it can see the ICCID) and determine what next.
Is your phone locked to rogers ?

ok, I bought another sim, cut very carefully, this time it worked (my phone is unlocked).
Now, I'll have to get a voucher / plan for data access, and work out what's best for calling - I think you said skype won't work with SO data plan?

unlikely. most IM use alternative ports, say gtalk.

everything worked untill i tried browsing and it said "safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet", anyone know why?
