So the "free phone" really means free? Or up to $75 off? Was reading and some other
threads and got a bit confused 🙂

It means that you will get either a free phone (like the Nokia 1208 or Nokia 1661) for free or $59 off another phone of your choice.
Since the 1661 or the 1208 both sell for $59.00, you would in essence be getting one of those 2 phones for free (with the purchase of a $100 top-up voucher of course).

This promotion will be especially valuable this year because SpeakOut will be discontinuing the bonus airtime on the $75 and $100 top-ups soon.

How much you want to bet that they will discontinue the bonus minutes offer at the beginning of nov/09.

I don't need a phone till november, so going to do some calculations to see if worth the risk...

I really can't see them discontinuing them just after a month after they announced it. My guess would be the bonus minutes would be discontinued starting Jan 1, 2010.

Are any of the new players, those that bought up bandwidth for obscene amounts of money, expected to enter the market before Christmas ?
😕

that really sucks

if that's the case i'll just top up $25 or $50 at a time. they better not change the expiry....

Same here. Its the only reason I am thinking of going with them. PC has almost the same plans ($.20 / Minute but they expire after 30 Days) they also have phones as low as $49.00... But the 365 Day expire is the carrot...

Here's some more news.

As I thought, and it is confirmed, that the bonus minutes on the $75 and $100 vouchers will continue through to the end of this year, and will likely be discontinued in the new year.

However, that is not a final thing. The bonus minutes on those top-ups will re-appear as promotional items from time to time. There are no "set in stone" times when they will appear, but they will appear just like other SpeakOut promotions. So, it's not totally dead in the water.

Stay tuned 🙂

Does that mean you have to buy the $75/$100 minutes and activate them before the end of the year to get the bonus or can you buy the refill as part of the "free phone" promo and then hold off for 90 days before activating them? Or will you lose the bonus that way?

From what I recall, airtime rules and promos are applied based on the date of activation, not the date of purchase.

Actually, airtime refills expire 90 days after purchase. You have to activate the airtime within 90 days of purchase, or you will lose the airtime (and bonus minutes).

The actual airtime pin printed on the receipt is not tied to any phone, so it is not tied to the activation of a phone. Also, I would think that SpeakOut will give a final date on when the bonus minutes offer will end, but right now it looks like it will be December 31, 2009. It might be a good idea to apply the $75 or $100 top-up just before that date, but I would do it before, or else you won't get any bonus minutes.

Sorry. To clarify, when I said "activation" I meant when you apply the voucher, not when you activate the phone. In other words, when there's a promo that gives you bonus airtime on vouchers, it is more important as to when you actually apply the voucher rather than when you bought the voucher (as long as you apply the voucher within 90 days or purchasing it, of course).

Hey is this rumor of rate change actually confirmed or just speculation ? So which would lead me to believe that the date quoted is also speculation too ? I would really hate to pay $0.25/min
