Wireless web coming soon?

From HoFo:

looks like Speakout's wireless web is working. Before you get too excited, as far as I can tell, currently you can't surf out and can only look at Speakout's meager offering of ringtones, graphics and games (pay to download, of course). I haven't been charged just to look around...

I'd be interested in how to get that working with my phone.

I put the SIM in a Motorola Razr and if I try the browser it just says "no network found".

If anyone knows how to get it working on a Blackberry 7290 I'd appreciate it.

thanks,

Thanks Matt. FWIW on the Moto KRZR K1 those parameters didn't work. One difference I noticed is that "Gateway IP:" is labelled as "Proxy1:". Once I set that to 208.200.067.150 I was able to surf to http://ztar.clearmode.com.

I'm not certain but i'm pretty sure I got charged while messing around on that crummy homepage on my phone.

I got this working on my Treo 600, but as others have reported, the only site I could visit was http://ztar.clearmode.com.

Specifics:

1. Go to prefs, select Network. Add a new service (or modify an existing one, should make a copy). I called mine Speakout:

Connection: GPRS
User Name: wapuser1
Password: wap
APN: goam.com

2. Click details, then Advanced. Uncheck automatic IP Address, and enter 208.200.67.150. I left Query DNS checked. You're done with Prefs.

3. Finally, in the Web application, in the menu select Options, then Preferences... Next choose Advanced, then Set Proxy. Check "Use Proxy" and enter in the Proxy Server line: 208.200.067.150, Port 80.

When you enter http://ztar.clearmode.com in your "open page" selection, you will be rewarded with the lamest of WAP pages offering you ringtones, graphics and games. But it's a start. Trying to open any other site returned an error.

@ Matt:

if you have the unlocked iphone, there should be a setting somewhere in the settings menu that lets you mess around with EDGE

I have an update to my previous post. You don't need to follow step 2 - in fact, on my Treo 650 (yep, I upgraded) it won't work if you set the IP address. Leave it to automatic.

I can confirm that browsing the ztar.clearmode.com site doesn't cost anything. Downloading a ringtone or a game might, though.

I also emailed the 7-11 and clearmode folks, and didn't get a response regarding wireless web availability for SpeakOut.

The settings (as modified today) work on a Palm 600. Fine work!

Some info: tried to setup on my 6310i - no luck. Finally found this page: https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/standard?step=terms.vm&javascript=enabled&bearerId=5&contractId=191&captchaEnabled=false&locale=en_CA&siteLanguageId=118 and they sent (SMSed?) me correct config - now WAP is working. Yes, can visit only their page.

FWIW, I'm trading emails with 7-11's Speakout tech division on enabling data access for my Treo, but nothing's happened as of yet.

Update re Speakout's tech support. Apparently wireless web may or may not be possible, but it's tied only to certain phones, ie, the 2610 and 2760.

Here's some of the email exchange I received:

"At this time the content for phones is supported only for Nokia handsets sold by 7-Eleven. Although, the Rogers GPRS settings will get the customer to the WAP site. They will not be able to surf another sites, nor will they be able to download Ringtunes etc since content is Handset specific."

So I'm not in a position to confirm whether or not wireless web can work unconditionally, or just to surf very specific content.

An update, my wife got a 2760, and wireless web works out of the box, but again it only goes to the ztar site and doesn't seem to surf outside of that. I haven't heard back from ztar/speakout about enabling regular web access.
