My friend has a Razr he would like to sell me for about 25 bucks. I would like to use this phone with the 7-11 speakout wireless plan. Do you guys think this would work? Would it be as easy as swapping the SIM cards? And I'd have to actually buy one of the 7-11 phones to get the SIM card am I correct?

Thanks for any info.

The phone has to be either unlocked or locked to Rogers (not Fido.) In that case you'd just have to swap SIMs. FWIW I have a KRZR that I use with a SpeakOut SIM in Canada and other SIMs overseas.

And yes, you'd have to buy a phone from 7-11 in order to get the SIM (or buy a SIM only from someone on this forum.)

How can I tell if the phone is unlocked?

Thanks.

Where did you get the phone? If it was previously purchased for a Rogers or Fido plan (or T-mobile or ATT in the US) then it's probably locked to that carrier. (And if it was previously working with Bell, Telus, Virgin, PC, etc. then it's not even a GSM phone.)

Probably the best way to tell if the phone is unlocked or is locked to Rogers is to borrow a SpeakOut SIM, try it in the phone and see if you can connect to their network.

When I bought our Nokia 1600 phones at 7-11 I brought along a Samsung phone I knew to be unlocked and asked the clerk if I could test their SIM in my Samsung. She had no problem with that as long as I didn't place any calls. That's OK because you only need to establish that you're connected. You'll see "SpeakOut" as the network name if you are.

You say that the phone has to be Unlocked or Locked to Rogers.

Do I have to worry about what "GSM" band it uses?
i.e. can I go to FactoryDirect and just get ANY GSM phone, or do I have to read specs and make sure it is the same GSM bands used as the SpeakOut phones?..I suspect that if i get a Quadband, then it will totally work.. but I figured I'd at least aske the question here.

.. Thanks.. Andrew

Unlocked GSM phones that work in Canada will work with SpeakOut. Technically that means they have to support the 850 and/or 1900 bands. (Both is better than one or the other.) I can't imagine any reputable store would sell phones that work only overseas (900 and 1800 bands.)

Yup. I have a quadband phone so I can use it here and in Europe (with appropriate SIM.)

AFAIK all Moto RAZR/KRZR etc. GSM(*) phones are quadband but I don't know if the ones that FactoryDirect sells are unlocked. If you want a new (not refurb) quadband, unlocked GSM phone at a reasonable price check out http://www.puremobile.ca/

(*) Motorola also sells CDMA variants of their RAZR/KRZR phones for use on Bell, Telus, et al networks. Those phones definitely won't work with SpeakOut.

so far yes, every phone that takes a sim card has worked with the speakout sim.
remember to copy contacts to sim on the 7-11 phone first.

Im still tryng to sweep the network signal for information to get wireless web cross over, this is possible, that way you can use i phone, lg prada and other smart phones.
Dont get to exited yet, cause there wont be alot of bandwidth here.
I have put these sims in some data logers around edtown, but still cannot get the data before the timeout happens.
