Use of US (Cingular) GSM Phomes on SpeakOut

I am an American merchant seaman on the Great Lakes who runs both the Welland Canal and the Detroit/St.Clair Rivers through most of spring, summer and fall. Recently I decided that the roaming rates with my US provider (Cingular) were outrageous in Rogers' Wireless country, and decided to look for a Canadian pay-as-you-go plan.

I like what I've read on this site/forum about the 7-11 speakout plan. I'll probably pick up a phone on my next visit to Hamilton, especially if the free phone with the $100 plan is still in effect.

What I would like to know however is if anyone has tried using 7-11 speakout phone SIMS with unlocked Cingular or T-mobile GSM phones from the states?

(I may have to try this myself if no one on the forum has yet and will provide my answer to the group)- Thanks in advance.

While I don't have any experience with unlocked phones from the US, I would think that having an unlocked GSM phone should, by definition, mean that it can be used with any GSM network's SIM card.

Well, if nobody else replies, do keep us updated!

I have used my Canadian 7-11 phone in the US with a different SIM card with no problem. If you have an unlocked GSM phone then I am sure it will work with the Canadian 7-11 SIM. This Speakout phone deal is a great one and as it says elsewhere on this site the coverage now is the full Rogers network which I understand to be the best in Canada. You really cannot lose. Actually if for some reason your GSM phone does not work why not just use the free phone that comes with the $100 credit? It really is a no lose situation.

The Cdn 7-11 SIM will work with ANY unlocked phone, so Cdn 7-11 SIM with unlocked T-Mo or Cingular phone should not give you any problems.

With Cdn 7-11 phones, the following are unlocked: 1100, 1112, 3120 and 6061. It's doubtful that the new 2610 is unlocked, as Rogers' version is hard locked (no unlocking calculator software has been invented for this phone yet). Most likely the Cdn 7-11 Nokia 2610 is just the same as the one offered by Rogers.

The only hitch is this I've been checking unlocked phones on ebay. Most of the phones there don't have the 850mhz. they are trimode 900 1800 1900, only cingular in some places uses the 850.

I just made sure I found myself a quadband motorola when I bought an unlocked. but that may be the reason for some in-ability to roam

Any unlocked phone will work fine; if it's locked to the Cingular network, it won't work. I recently bought a US Cingular Treo 650, and it wouldn't register on the network except for emergency calls. I used an on-line unlocking service (~$10 USD) to unlock it; took about 10 minutes.
