I was wondering if anyone knows the following:

Here in Saskatchewan Sasktel has and continues to switch their towers to 3G, which provides a very very large coverage area for the province. Currently I use Speakout which is the same coverage area as Rogers. Rogers coverage in Saskatchewan is very poor. My question is, if I get to a part of the province that has 3G coverage provided by Sask-Tel, will I be able to access it to make a call?

Nope, with Speakout you will only ever have access to the Rogers network. Only Sasktel subscribers have access to their network.

As andreww says, with a Speakout phone in Saskatchewan, you will only be able to use the Rogers network.
That limits you to coverage along the major highways. The only areas with 3G coverage are Regina and Saskatoon — not that that matters to Speakout customers unless SO becomes 3G.

SaskTel has partnered their 3G network with the Telus/Bell network, so a Telus or Bell 3G phone will work wherever the Sasktel 3G network reaches. If you have a Sasktel 3G phone you are able to use it wherever the Telus and Bell 3G networks are available outside Saskatchewan.

If the new 3G network in Saskatchewan is aligned with Bell/Telus, I better add that the Bell/Telus network does not do GSM, they only use HSDPA gear. So unless Rogers has added new towers in Saskatchewan, which I doubt, you will still be subject to the current limits you face now for some time to come.

On another note, President's Choice mobile now sell SIM cards that work on the Bell/Telus network for $10, and their latest terns and conditions got more reasonable, and now look to be a worthy competitor to Speakout.

Sorry — My mistake. I was thinking 3G and said GSM.

I edited my post.

Rogers won't likely add many towers in Saskatchewan ever. Their coverage in Saskatchewan is pretty much from the old CNCP telecoms towers and it follows the main railway lines — which by default gives them coverage of the major highways. That would be an expensive proposition to change. They have 3G coverage for their own network in the two major population areas and could theoretically add 3G for most of the smaller cities from their existing facilities if there were demand. The majority of folks using Rogers (and by default Speakout) outside Regina and Saskatoon will be traveling down the highways. The 2G network will handle their phone calls.

bridonca's suggestion to check out President's Choice is going to get you much better coverage in Sask than any phone using the Rogers system will ever give.

BTW, good thread. I also have one question, but I didn't feel it was worth opening a whole new thread. Has anyone gotten good reception in Clavet, just outside of Saskatoon with SpeakOut? I travel there, almost twice every year and it would be nice if I would have coverage. Thx!
