I have a SO cell phone I'm not using. I let my wife use the SIM from it in her unlocked Motorola.I'd now like a cell of my own since they took away my BB from work, since I retired. Can I buy a SO SIM card online from this forum and use it in my old SO cell? I'm in area code 250 .Does it matter what area code the SIM card is from ; can I change the area code when I register it? Is there an extra cost for this?

Thanks

The account is tied to the SIM card, not the phone. The Speakout SIM will work on any unlocked North American GSM phone, any unlocked quad band GSM phone, and any locked Rogers and Speakout phones.

It can be better to buy a used Speakout SIM card that is not in your area code because it cost nothing to change it to your area. I believe Speakout charges you extra if you change numbers in the same area code. There seem to be quite a few unactivated SIMs out there for sale due to last month's free phone and SIM when you buy $100 phone credit promotion. Sadly, that promotion is no longer in effect.

Thank you for your reply. I was also disappointed that the promotion for a free phone with a $100 minute card had ended. Mabe they'll re establish it ?!

Unfortunately, I believe Speakout usually does a promotion like that once a year as a way to clear out the old phone stock. I am not really in the know either way though, so it would be nice if I was wrong.

I've also had SO change a number to reflect a different local calling area in the same area code with no charge. I bought a phone with a 250 Area Code in Victoria with a Victoria number. The phone was going to be used in Nanaimo which would have made it long distance for anyone in Nanaimo to call the phone. I called SO customer service and they changed to a Nanaimo number free even though both are in Area Code 250.

All calls from the SO phone within area code 250 are local. Calls to your SO phone are localized using the old POTS numbering plan. So if you have a Victoria based SO phone number and someone in Nanaimo or Kelowna etc. phones that number it is long distance for the caller. Having a SO phone with a 250 Area Code means that everything to and from any area code 250 phone is local for you. It doesn't mean everyone in area code 250 can call you as a local call to them.

Thanks for straightening me out Ron: I did know that but my thinking was temporarily disoriented.
