Hi I will be retiring soon and am not too hip on all the cell phone jargon, My contract is up with bell in 30 days and I would like to know in laymans terms if I go with the 7/11 prepaid, will the phone work in Florida i will be there for three months and will it work while i am driving down.

Thanks john....

No, a Speak Out phone bought in Canada will not work in the USA at all. Your best bet would be to get a prepaid phone package like Tracfone or Net10 once you get in the USA. They are readily available at stores like Walmart there. Tracfone has coverage all over the States.

John,
I also spend some time in Florida during the winter. Just as iamdrumming said, I bought a TracFone to use in Florida and while driving there and back (in the U.S.) Everything is not too expensive and I am quite happy with the service. T-Mobile also has a pre-paid plan.

You can use the 7-11 phone with a US sim card provided the 7-11 phone is unlocked. Most of 7-11 phones are unlocked, but apparently, some of the newer models are indeed locked. A new sim card will have a new phone number, you cannot use the old one unless you use the old sim. You can swap the sims back and forth.

No, the sim card is your identity/phone number on the network. Each sim card has it's own phone number. You can switch sims using one phone only if a phone is unlocked (not tied to one provider).

When you buy a prepaid kit (like Tracfone) while in the States, a sim will be included.

There is good reading about sim cards on the home page of this site. I would encourage to do lots of reading there as well.
