My son has been getting some random calls from unknown numbers on his phone recently that are dropped as soon as he answers them. Is this a network issue? His number is widely known (close group of family/friends).

Probably a telemarketer. I get the same calls. If he doesn't recognize a number, just let it go to voice-mail, as I do. If they really want to get a hold of him, they will leave a message, otherwise you'll be paying for airtime if you answer the call.

If only it was so easy. The numbers appear to be coming from various, unrelated local businesses and when answered the calls just drop. Its happened to him 6 times in the last 2 days. He hasn't noticed any charges for them so it looks like they are dropped before or just as he answers. He didn't receive any today so maybe it was a system glitch.

I usually just google the calls coming in and you can get a pretty good idea as to who is calling you , and you can also google your son's phone number to see if there is any business history with it.

Here is a trick to stop telemarketers. Before your message starts use a "sit.wav" file which is a tone Bell uses to indicate a disconnected line. It sounds like Doo dah dee.

See this link and at the end of the article there is a link to download the wav file.
