questions about starting up

Hi,
I'm a fido user, but I hardly ever use my cell. I have a few questions, if someone can help me out.

1. It seems like Speakout is the cheapest way to go for someone who uses a cell only a minute or two a month. Can anyone confirm this?

2. Is there a way to merely buy time, but use my old Fido Nokia? Or will I have to buy a phone from 7-11?

3. What does does it mean if a phone is locked, or unlocked?

4. Why would someone buy just a SIM card?

Thanks so much to anyone who can help.

1. Yes -- as far I can tell
2. With Fido, probably no -- fido phones are locked
3. Unlocked phone can be used with any GSM carrier
4. You can, from here

Hi Mike, thanks for the info.

Re: question 4: not how, but why would someone buy just a SIM card? To use with an unlocked phone?

Thanks again.

Yes, buying just the SIM card allows you to use your existing unlocked phone. Depending on what Nokia you have, you might even be able to unlock it for free. See here (although use at your own risk, because you only have a certain number of unlock attempts):

http://www.gsmliberty.net/shop.....unlock.php

Usually you have to:

1) Find the IMEI code, which can be found behind the battery
2) Enter the code into the form on that website (along with model number, service provider, and country) to generate the unlock password
3) Turn on the phone without a SIM card in it, then enter the unlock password

It's definitely the cheapest option. At 20 cents per minute locally and 30 cents per minute long distance it's quite reasonable. The real story (IMO) is that you carry over your balance minutes when you recharge (ie., buy credit at a 7-11 store) and the credit is good for a year from the date you buy.

My wife and I bought phones during their September promotion, $100 credit got you a free phone, and we slipped the SIM cards into our old off-contract Rogers phones.

If they can get Wireless Web working, it will be fantastic.

I had to insert a SIM card from another network (e.g. 7-11 or Rogers) before my Nokia let me enter the unlock code.

So, am I right that I could buy a used SIM card, get the area code switched to 416 if I need to, and insert it into my Nokia (providing I can unlock it), and simply buy time?

If I can't unlock my Nokia, I could just buy a used unlocked phone for cheap maybe.

Am I getting this right?

Thanks!

Yes. But even simpler (and cheaper) is to wait for the free phone promo to return (rumoured for November), then get a new, unlocked phone with SIM for free when you buy $100 in airtime.
