Hi, I purchased a SO voucher yesterday from the store but not able to purchase the SIM through customer service because since they need a code number from the voucher. There is only a "Your PrePaid Card Number". Can someone tell me where about is the code number or passcode.

The prepaid card number is the code number they want.

Problem solved...called Head-Office and got the serial number. Looks like the voucher did not print out the s/n and the auth#. So if you are going to purchase a voucher make sure you have the prepaid# and the serial# on the voucher.

No, they definitely need the serial number. That's the reason my request was rejected the first time.
Now I am all good to go.

Letter arrived today. This is what it looks like, if you were wondering.

From here, you don't have to call customer service. Just make a call, and it'll take care of itself.

Hi

I just went and bought a $25 plus tax voucher and phoned in to order the sim card. After a series of questions they informed me that the sim card would be arriving in the mail in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Nice people at customer service... if they don't lose your order, which they did mine. Don't hold your breath about when it arrives, even with the second order. They make promises. Reality is something else.

I have skimmed through this thread and noticed that there are several posts about unsuccessful attempts to find out more information in store. Until recently I used to work at a 7eleven and my advice is don't bother asking. The staff probably can't help because they haven't been informed about the details. Before I left I was the only person who actually understood how Speakout worked (and that was only because I did a lot of research online, including this website out of personal interest). I was probably the first customer to buy a phone from my location and I am sure I sold the second, and if I wasn't around that phone wouldn't have been sold simply because no one else (other than the manager) even knew we were selling Speakout phones.

Hey guys,

New user here. I just wanted to clarify, is the SIM card included in the $25+ voucher (ie. they will send me the SIM card for free)?

Thanks.

No. For $25, you get a SIM card with $5 worth of airtime, good for 30 days once activated. You can then buy airtime for $25, which will last a year if you do not use the phone much.

Hm, okay. Do phone purchases include the SIM card? If they do, I might as well purchase a $50+ voucher and receive the Nokia 1661 for $29 from their ongoing promo...

Yes, you get a SIM card with a Speakout phone purchase. It should not be too hard to sell the Nokia 1661 on Kijiji. It is compatible with Rogers, great replacement phone, if the old one meets an unscheduled demise.

From ebay listings, it also looks like they can be unlocked now for fairly cheap, which means you could also use it on Fido.

You would be wrong on that one. A locked Speakout Nokia 1661 phone will not work with FIDO. As far as I know, it is still extremely difficult to unlock a Speakout Nokia 1661 phone. A locked Speakout Nokia 1661 phone is not the same phone as a locked Rogers Nokia 1661.

I can understand the confusion though. As a beacon of inconsistency, all locked Nokia C3 phones sold in Canada are interchangeable with other carriers that use the Rogers network. Weird eh?

unlock speakout locked phone as far as I know is IMPOSSIBLE.

glad to know that my C3 works with other GSM providers though I was told that 1661 works on Fido as well(I sold mine to a friend's kid and they are on fido).

a side note, is 1661 really locked ? I didn't have the time to test it but two of my prior phone from petro canada are not. I am guessing that they only lock phones that have higher 'value' and can be used in other part of the world.

A NA GSM phone is of little use to say Asia so for a model like 1661, it really is not worth the trouble to lock it. A C3 is another story as it is a quad band one so can be used anywhere, if unlocked.

Yeah, the Nokia 1661 is locked. FIDO cannot use that phone, but Rogers, and the other Ztar carriers can. They have some real brainiacs working at Rogers. I would like to think someone knocked some of the stupid out of them when they introduced the C3. Still locked, but works with all carriers that use the Rogers network.

This is an area that should be addressed by cell phone legislation. Cell phone providers should be required to provide users with unlock codes, on request, after the user has owned the phone for some period of time. This is especially true for prepaid services such as Speakout, where the initial cost of phones is not heavily subsidized by monthly contract fees.

Want to clarify

We buy $25 voucher from 7-11 to PAY for the SIM card right (which comes with $5 credit)?
vs. paying with Credit Card via the phone

I initially thought we can get a FREE SIM card with $25 voucher (i.e. I'll have $25 credit to add to the free SIM card)... I think I totally misunderstood

Thanks
