Porting number

Greetings,

My plan with Fido will be cancelled by the end of this month and I want to keep my current number and use it with SO.

Fido CS told me that my number will expire as soon as my plan is cancelled so I'm wondering how long it usually takes to port a wireless number, ie how long in advance should I contact SO CS to request the porting without risking the loss of my number

Thanks in advance.

I believe the FAQ on Speakout says 2 days to port and with me it took 2 days - it can actually be done in a matter of hours if you are lucky but to be safe you may wish to allow 3-4 days to be safe in case any glitches. 🙂

I stand corrected - website says can take up to 72 hours - "How long does it take to transfer my existing number to SpeakOut Wireless?

The process to transfer your number should take about 2 hours to complete during normal business hours. As such, it can take up to 72 hours. Once the trasfer is complete, your old phone will stop working and your SpeakOut Wireless number will become active.

I would contact SO CS and ask them how best to go about porting your number from Fido. I suspect the answer depends on what you mean by "cancelled", i.e. did your contract term end or did you explicitly cancel service with Fido. You may also need to contact Fido CS to ensure that you're not charged some ridiculous early termination fee for porting out a few days before your contract ends.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm on a month-to-month plan with Fido. All I had to cancel it was to let them know a month in advance, there was no mention of any early cancellation fees.

I will contact Fido again though and also SO just to be sure.

Then you don't need to contact Fido. When you port your number to SO they'll end your service with them automatically as of the end of the current billing cycle. You'd only need to coordinate with Fido if you were on a contract and wanted to end it prior to the end of the term.

I will contact Fido again though and also SO just to be sure.

Just call SO a few days before your current month with Fido ends. SO will want proof that you own the number you want to port, e.g. your Fido account number, voicemail password, IMEI of your phone, etc.

It should be that easy. Welcome to SO!
