I am new to Speakout and phones in general since this is my first phone. I have a phone that is not from Speakout and I haven't activated it yet. I got a Speakout sim card and what do I need to do now in order to get a phone number? My phone came with a Bell sim card, so I can activate that and port the number to Speakout? Or can Speakout just give me a phone number? The phone is locked to Bell, but I will unlock it.

Either Bell and Speakout can give you a phone number once you activate each carrier's respective SIM cards.

Speakout does not give you any choice when it comes to picking a number in your area. Bell can give you an option to pick a number. However, you can port that Bell number to Speakout if you do not like the number Speakout selected for you. So it might be a good strategy to use the Bell SIM first, then a few days before the Bell SIM expires, register the Speakout SIM, and port the Bell number over if you do not like the Speakout number.

do remember that porting a number would make your old bell SIM useless. I would not recommend that as you can keep the SIM for as long as you want so long it is not activated. Unless you know bell's number pool has what you want.

chimpanzee: Seriously, who would want to stick with Bell? Only reason to buy a Bell phone is to unlock it and use a superior carrier. Use them and abuse them before you give them a chance to use and abuse you.

Yes, I am still a bitter ex Bell customer.

Thanks. So do I just need to activate my SIM card online and it will give me a phone number? I'm just confused because in the FAQ it says

Can I choose my phone number, like say, 604.VAN.ITY1?”
“No. SpeakOut handsets have pre-assigned phone numbers so you cannot pick a specific number for your phone. Sorry. Click here to read more about Local Number Portability.”

and I don't have a Speakout phone, so I don't have a pre-assigned number.

Rogers assigns Speakout a certain pool of phone numbers, and I suspect these numbers are Roger's hard to remember reject numbers. So when you activate a Speakout SIM, Speakout will assign you a number for your area, but likely not an easy number to remember. Unlike with some other carriers, you cannot choose from Speakout's pool of numbers, you get the number assigned to you.

As I said before, to get an easy to remember number for your Speakout account, you would have to port one over.

Thanks again. I'm gonna activate Bell then Speakout and if I like the Bell number then I'll port it over to Speakout. I just have one more question, is it okay to activate two different sim cards on the same phone?

I doubt Speakout and Bell keep tabs on each other's phones. In your situation, you can use the same IMEI for both services.

With Speakout, you really do not need to give out your phone's IMEI. They will use a dummy IMEI if you do not provide them with one, and the SIM card will just work in either case.

As for Bell, you do not have to give them a IMEI either. However, usually, they tie the start up credit to the phone, so it might be better to provide one if you bought a Bell phone.
