Limited service on other GSM phone?

Quote from 7-11 website;

Can I use any GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) phone with SpeakOut Wireless Service?

You may be able to use 850/1900 Mhz phones with SpeakOut Wireless Service, but 7-Eleven does not support Non-SpeakOut Wireless phones. Features such as voicemail, Text Messaging, and Wireless Web may not work with Non-SpeakOut Wireless phones.

Is it true that Texting and voicemail may not work if I use some unlocked GSM phone?

It's technically possible, on some older phones especially, but any unlocked GSM phone I have had my SpeakOut sim in have been able to access voicemail, and text with no problems.

I think they just put that disclaimer in there to discourage using non-SpeakOut phones, and/or are just tired of people who call in to customer service complaining about their service, when not all the features work on any given phone at any given time.

"7-Eleven does not support Non-SpeakOut Wireless phones"

Means what it says. Don't call 7-11/SO CS for help with a non-SO phone if you encounter problems because they're simply not set up to help you. This is especially true if you get a newer multi-function phone like the iPhone or BlackBerry that has many features like data that aren't available on the SO system. For example some newer phones will try to use a 3G network and then complain when they can't find one unless you configure them not to look. You can't expect SO CS to know about stuff like that. (Which is one reason why this forum exists. Chances are that someone here will know.)

I don't have a crazy new phone like iphone or touch screen type.
and I won't be using any web browser, so I guess I shouldn't worry too much about basic functions like call display, voice message, and texting.

Thank you! 😀

No, I wouldn't worry about it either, especially if you are using a non-SpeakOut phone. Some features will work, and some won't. As Bylo said, they will not support non-SpeakOut phones, for obvious reasons.
