Odd thing going on....I lent a friend my SpeakOut phone short while back and he mentioned that it did not work in the States. He was travelling from Toronto to Niagara Falls, crossing the border, then hitting Buffalo airport to catch a plane to Miami to get a cruiseship. The phone worked about a mile into the states then crapped out. Went to SOS only.
When he arrived in Miami, same thing.
Got on the cruiseship and the next day he was in Roatan, Honduras. Phone no longer said SOS. He had a signal, but when he called out, it was a spanish operator message. He could receive text messages. He sent two texts though, non got through.

Caymans nothing worked
Jamaica text messages rcvd, cannot transmit.

Anyone every have a similar experience while travelling with their SpeakOut?

Working as advertised. The SpeakOut brochure shows only coverage in Canada. The terms and conditions includes, "US roaming not currently available."

If you want to use your SpeakOut phone in the US you'll need to get a SIM that works there. Probably the best deal is from T-Mobile although other options include AT&T, SpeakOut US (as in Canada, phone plus SIM plus airtime), Rogers PAYGO, et al. Check the respective websites and/or eBay for details and prices.
