I lost my speakout phone...

I bought a speakout phone and put a fido sim in it. However recently I lost the phone. I know I can buy a new sim to keep my number and minutes left, so the question is does Fido or any other gsm network know what imei is being used or do they just know what sim is used and not the imei. The imei is registered with Fido and I'm wondering if someone can just swap there sim card in and the network has no clue what imei it is.

Call Fido CS to report the phone stolen. Ask what you can do to get a new phone/SIM and transfer your airtime to that. They may also be able to disable the old phone/SIM so whoever has your phone can't use it.

I called and transfered my number to my new sim. They said that they would put that imei on a blacklist if someone was to activate a new account with it, but it sounds like the person who got it can still use it with their sim. My question is when someone makes a phone call on a gsm network, does both the sim and imei number gets transmitted to the network? Or is it just the sim number? If its the latter, then there is no way to block my phone from being used with another sim.
