If I were to buy a SO phone today (in August) because they have the free phone promo on, would I be able to keep it (and not activate) till christmas?

I want to give my parents a phone (for christmas), but if I wait to buy it, the promo will end...so is there any harm in buying it now and not activating until december??

thanks

Maria - you can do that. The phone's accounts are already activated upon purchase. The preloaded ($5?) airtime expires in 365 days. The promo runs through until the end of September.

With the promo, the additional $100 voucher must be applied within 90 days from purchase to any existing account, rolling over any leftover time for another 365 days.

They make a great gift!

It is not activiated until you dial out. But if you want to give it as gift, I will advise you to buy near the end of Sept, So, 90 days later, it is after Christmas.

No personal information is required, since it is a prepaid service.

Also, this is a direct copy and paste for the Speak Out site:

"How do I activate my new SpeakOut Wireless Phone?

Simply follow the 4 Step instructions on your activation card, located inside your SpeakOut Wireless phone box. You'll also need your 7 digit activation code and 5 digit Store # that is printed on the blue "Welcome to SpeakOut Wireless" quick start guide."

So, it looks like Speak Out phones are no longer pre-activated. Not a big deal though.

thank you iamdrumming for the informative post i was at a standstill when i saw that they changed it around i just dislike giving out my personal information to cellphone companies (telus, bell, etc) since they seem to like screwing there customers around alot and topping up every month could be a problem with some people thats why i love speakout no hassles and so simple to use cheers

Fair enough.

topping up every month could be a problem

How? SO doesn't even offer that "service" to people who would want it 😉
