Iam looking at getting a another phone but it takes nano sim cards . This means that I would have to get a new sim to fit in the new phone . if I get the new sim does it mean I will need to get different # from the one I am currently using with my current phone?

No. Just buy a 3-in-1 sim card found here:

https://www.speakout7eleven.ca/sim-cards.html

then get SpeakOut customer service to transfer your number/account to the new sim card.

Most importantly, do not activate the new sim card! Just call customer service, and they will switch it over.
