According to this document, http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/info.....ht/t15.htm After 2 December 2013, you can ask your carrier to unlock your phone. It cannot be on contract though, unless the contract is paid in full. I do not see any loopholes, but I am sure they exist.

EDIT: Oh, maybe there is a loophole. I do not see anything saying the carrier cannot charge for unlocking.

I'm sure unlocking using eBay will be much cheaper. And we've been doing that all along anyway.

One other point of interest is this:

"a minimum seven-day grace period in order to “top up” your prepaid card account and retain your balance."

Does ebay unlocking actually work? I was led to believe it was a scam, according to posts in an iphone forum.

It is hard to cheaply unlock an iphone. You need the blessing of both the carrier and apple to have a successful unlock.

The hacks really do not work on a iphone, because apple keeps track of the phone.

For other phones though, I have successfully unlocked phones using codes sold by ebay.
