(Looks like my first try did not make it through)

I let the battery run down on my newish Nokia 1208. I quickly plugged it into the charger and left if for at least 6 hours. Upon my return the display shows only the tip of the "battery" icon was blinking, which I presume means that battery did not hold the charge. While plugged in the keypad lights up and shows this icon, but the phone otherwise does not work. Unplugged it won't turn on and stays dark.

I can't believe letting a lithium batt. run down has caused this. Lead acid batteries don't like being drained, but lithium should be able to stand it.

Any advice would be appreciated. This is my first cellphone and I've gathered a ton of info from this cool site.

Thanks.

Mine did that too. I took the battery out & put it back in. Everything has been fine since then. Hopefully this will work for you too.

This happened to me awhile back. I let my battery drain until it was totally dead. Just like you, I plugged in the charger, and let it sit, but it would not charge. Everything wqas black for me as well. I thought I had damaged the battery. This is how I solved it:

First, you need to get a desktop charger like the Nokia DT-14.
Take the battery right out of the phone, and put it right it the DT-14, so you or just charging the battery, without any phone involved.

I know that it seems that you should be able to keep the battery in the phone and charge it, but that didn't work for me at all. As soon as I put the dead battery in my DT-14 desktop charger, the battery charged just fine.

A lot of Nokia phones will be able to charge the battery also, like the 2125i and 6275i as examples. If you have a buddy with a nokia phone that is an option.

FYI, Lithium batteries HATE being run down. Because circuitry is already needed to prevent the battery from exploding, there is also circuitry to make sure the battery is not run down all the way, it leaves a little in reserve. The advantage is that allows the battery to last longer, and that reserve can be used if you are making an emergency 911 call.

Thanks all for the replies, and it looks like I've been able to solve the problem.

The first thing I thought of was to take the battery out and put it back, but that did nothing. But the tech help at the Nokia Canada site said to power it back up by holding the End button for three seconds, and that worked. I had to reset the time and date, but everything else is still good.

So I'm back in action! 🙂

Oh, and bridonca you are right in that lithiums don't like being run down, and that they have that extra protective circuitry. My comment was that being run down should not kill them as it can with lead acid batteries.

I use a 48V SLA pack with an electric-assist motor for my cargo trike, and last year ran it right down and it would not properly hold a charge after that. I had to spend $200 on a new pack. 🙁

In my earlier post I forgot to mention holding the power for a few seconds. Same battery thing happens to my PDA so that's why I tried it with the Nokia 1208 & it did the trick.

Thanks for posting the solution! I thought my phone was dead. Holding the End button after it was charged brought it back to life.
