Hi, sorry for my vast ignorance...

I know this speakout phone uses the rogers network. I assume it is locked.

Can it be unlocked easily/cheaply?
Will it still work here as before if unlocked?
Will it work in Japan with a rental/purchase sim there? (I think this has 2G GSM 850, Japan has LTE 850. Not sure if they are compatible.)

Thanks for any feedback.

I have to say no across the board.

The 1661 is a cheap phone but one of the hardest phones to unlock. And it would only work in North America when unlocked, because it is not quad band. only 850/1900. Japan and the rest of the world use the 900/1800 GSM band.

I did not know Japan now uses the 850 mhz band, that band was never used for GSM, but I am not surprised they now use it for LTE. Not going to help your problem though. I strongly doubt any Japanese carrier will make that new band work with GSM.
