Is the Nokia 1600 quad band? ie, 850, 1900, 900, 1800, as specified in the user guide.

Or dual band, 850, 1900, as suggested by the Nokia Canada's web page?

I guess it's GSM 850/1900 for the Rogers network. The 900/1800 variant is for other networks.

After all, the phone's too inexpensive to be quad-band.

You could call 1-888-22-NOKIA (1-888-226-6542) or 7-11's CS to confirm.

Thanks. I have already emailed Nokia.

I'm hoping that it's quad band, so I can get it unlocked and bring it when I travel to Asia.

Just my hope... maybe it really is quad. it would be a bit more expensive to manufacture different 850/1900 and 900/1800 phones for different carriers.

It's more like different markets/continents than different carriers. I don't expect Mexico to make all the 1600s in the world either. 😉

Manufacturers usually offer different specs in different markets and price ranges, in order to reduce parallel imports and maintain product differentiation.

Anyway, Nokia UK clearly states the 1600 is dual-band, even though all 4 frequencies are mentioned like our User Guide does:

While Nokia USA only mentions 850/1900 (i.e. North American GSM) :

Oh that is really interested. So "dual band"/"quad band" are not really consistent across market.

You have a good point that they may have different plants making the phone. I guess I should not keep my hope up that the Speakout 1600 is quad band. 🙁

My guess is that it supports whatever dual band is enabled in the firmware. So if you want to use it in another country with a different band frequency, you could backup your phone firmware and install the new firmware with the correct band. Or it could just be a SEEM edit to switch between which band is enabled theoretically you might be able to enable all bands

Just an update. I still have not received any email from Nokia's customer support on the question.

But I did notice the printed label on the box that states "For use on GSM 850/900 networks". It's the label that states the IMEI, so I guess this is more authoritative than the manual.

So I think using this oversea should not be a problem as 900 is a common frequency for other parts of the world.
