I was given a used Telus LG6070. As far as I know this phone has no SIM, correct? Can I do anything with it other than go with Telus?

Your synopsis is correct 1stTimer - this is a cdma phone that does not utilise a SIM card. There is nothing you can do with it except to use it on the Telus network.
