I'm considering signing up with Speak out. I'm bringing my own smart phone (Samsung Galaxy S11 x from Koodo, have unlock code).

I understand Speak Out shares coverage/towers with Rogers?? I live in Winnipeg and apparently MTS shares towers with Rogers. Would I receive both HSPA and GSM coverage with Speak out and the phone I have? Or only GSM? If I look at the Rogers website coverage section, Speak out would have the exact same coverage? I know there is a Speak Out coverage area on the website. No offense, Rogers showed a little more detail.

Coverage is important to me. I understand there will be the odd weak area. I mainly travel to Brandon, south to Carman, Morden, Steinbach, North to Gimli,, east towards Whiteshell Provincial Park.

Value Plan for $20.00 a month. The Free Canada Long Distance section. I live in Winnipeg, so if I call someone in Calgary I'm not charged extra for LD? I'm just using the 100 min per month and no extra charge for LD? If I am visiting Calgary and call home to Winnipeg same thing using 100 min or am I charged extra LD?

For this plan I just purchase $20.00 top up cards each month? And you can only purchase at 7-11 and not buy Speak Out website?

I don't use data, so I shouldn't experience problems using wifi, checking gmail, web surfing , texting with my phone (will be unlocked, buy a Speak Out sim card)?

Thanks for your help!

Perhaps this will help a little:

I know at Hwy 59 east side of Lake Winnipeg it appears accurate because I lost signal around the casino out there, which is about what the graphic shows!

This is a good site, which I have used for years. It will show where all the towers are throughout Canada.

If Rogers covers it, so will Speakout.

I do not believe you will get much 2G coverage in Manitoba, because MTS is 3G only. Rogers had a much smaller footprint in Manitoba before they made a deal with MTS, so the legacy gear will probably do 2G. You should probably get a 3G phone with Speakout in any case.

With the Canada wide plan, you can call anywhere in Canada there is a Rogers tower nearby. You can receive a call anywhere also. That is included with the quota. You go over the quota though, you will pay through the nose. If you need more minutes, you can cancel your plan when you are close to exhausting your quota, and renew to get more minutes. Money will be taken out of your balance of course.

I would buy a $100 card, and that will get $125 credit. You get a free 2G phone out of it also. Offer expires the end of December. If you do not need the plan for a certain month or months, cancel it, and renew when convenient. Credit lasts a year, though you do get charged $1.25 each month

If your phone works with wifi, it should still work with wifi. You need to enable data on Speakout for it to work, and if you do not, no worries for you, if wifi is good enough for you.

Thanks everyone for your help!

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S2 X. With Koodo it runs on the 4G network. According to the Samsung Website..Dual Cell HSPA+ for download speeds of 42 Mbps. I'm assuming it will work with SpeakOut 3G network and offer the coverage I need? Any way to tell if this phone will work with SpeakOut besides putting sim card in first (it will be unlocked before inserting sim)??

Rogers shares towers with MTS. But do they also have their own individual towers?

"With SpeakOut, your time is yours, good for a full 365 days, and any unused time rolls over when you buy more*.This only applies to prepaid airtime vouchers. If airtime is purchased within a value plan, it will expire 30 days from the value plan activation/reactivation date."

I'm assuming I would need to buy a $25.00 top up card for the $20.00 a month value plan?

You add your top up card on the day of expiry for continuation into the next month (top up every 30 days)?

I'm assuming you can check your expiry date, balance on the SpeakOut website?

Once unlocked, your Samsung Galaxy S2 X will work fine with Speakout in Manitoba. The Samsung Galaxy S2 X also does 3G, so it is a suitable phone for Speakout.

Just make sure the Samsung Galaxy S2 X is unlocked, it costs about $10 to unlock it.

I am not perfectly clear who shares what with who, and it what areas, but it really does not matter. With the Samsung Galaxy S2 X, you can use all towers that Rogers and MTS makes available.

$25 is needed to use the $20 a month value plan. $25 is enough to also cover the $1.25 monthly 911 fee. You balance carrier the next month if you buy another card. Currently $100 is the best deal, because another $25 is added to the balance. That should last 4 months, with some money left over on the $20 a month value plan.

You can check your minutes remaning, account balance, and expiry date with your phone by dialing *777*1# or online if you create an account.

*777*4# gives data remaining if you're on that plan. tobanz is not
*777*1# gives minutes remaining the plan tobaz is looking at.

My bad I guess 4 gives me minutes remaining and exp date and data so Ibassumed 4 would do minutes and date and not show data if data was not part of the plan but perhaps modern programmers develop differently than I do.
