You can only get at: Avondale food store in eastern Ontario, none in Ottawa, or even close.

"Eastern Ontario" in this case means the Niagara region, which of course, is west of Ottawa ๐Ÿ˜‰

As for the Ottawa stores, I presume the ex-7-11 stores will be offering G2G phones and airtime instead of SO, i.e. not much will change and you'll be able to switch from SO to G2G without losing your phoen number, airtime, phone, etc. You should be thankful that they at least offer you this option.

Bylo: Perhaps you can answer this question which I think I know the answer to...

I have an opportunity to purchase a second SO phone at in another city at a 7-11
(of course). So if I bring this new phone back to the 613 area code and activate it here,
will the phone be assigned a 613 # or a number from the originating place of purchase?

I think it would get a 613 number if activated here in this area code.

Just can't beat the SO option of $25/year to keep it active.

Cheers!

The phone number is pre-assigned and printed on the box. That will be a number that's local to the 7-11 that sold the phone. That's not a problem though, because once you get to 613-land, call SO CS and tell them you've just moved. They'll assign you a new phone number that's local to you. There's no charge for this.

After digging into good to go wireless. I have no idea why are they giving us that option. They are just like Speakout except, you have to pay 10 cents income and outgoing, voucher last 90, 180, 365, for $25, $50, $100 respectfully. You can only get at: Avondale food store in eastern Ontario, none in Ottawa, or even close. Visit: http://goodtogowireless.com/ for more information. Ztar also runs it. I want to run one of these as business.

Quickie in Ottawa will be offering Good 2 Go as of November 1st. SMS with G2G is free for incoming, 10ร‚ยข outgoing. Does anyone know if Quickie has a gas station merchant code with MasterCard? If they do I will likely switch to G2G, because I get better cashback at gas stations and grocery stores (mbna smart cash card). If I don't get the better ash back at Quickie, then I'm clearly switching to PCM.

I heard that the long term plan for 7-11 is to pull out of Ontario all together because the Canadian head office is located in BC and because they only have a small market share in Ontario it is not worth it for them to stay. Not sure how true that is. Also heard that we will be able to top-up online or buy from petro Can if we continue to use speak out, again not sure how true.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it strange that the same parent company Ztar seems to be offering the same service through different companies at different prices. what is up with that???? Why is it not just standard rates and expirey dates regardless of plan.:???:

Interesting rumour.

Ztar isn't the parent company of 7-11 or PetroCan. Ztar is a MVNO that provides a PAYG cellphone service that's sold by 7-11 and PC et al. Those resellers are free to set their own rates, expiry periods and other terms and conditions in order to compete with each other as well as the big-3 and their low-cost brands like Solo, Fido and Koodoo.

I have a 7-11 phone with a large balance. I think it expires in November. I live in Ottawa.

I was planning to buy another $100 this week, but now I'm wondering about that.

Should I stick with 7-11, switch to Petrocan, or switch to G2G? It seems like the only difference right now is 20c/min with 7-11 on the $75/$100 top-up.

If I'm looking at this right, is it worth getting the 7-11 top-up now since it's 20c/min and then switching to one of the others? Is there a downside to Petrocan, it appeals because of the online management and ability to get top-ups in Montreal and other places where there's no 7-11 or Quickie.

Thanks!
=aw

[p.s. is there any sort of promo on now? I can't afford to wait until Nov 16 as I'm not sure of the exact expiry]

Just spoke to a 7-11 rep. She told me the last day to switch without extra cost & keeping your 711 balance & phone number is Dec. 31. Ottawa 7-11 stores will be closing Nov. 1, but your Speakout service will still work in Ottawa & you just need to buy topup in another city.

If you switch to Petrocan, do they transfer the balance of your account including the bonus that was used to make SO cost 20c (i.e. I believe they credit your account with $125 if you add a $100 topup, so you get 500min)? I don't think they adjusted existing balances when they went from 20c to 25c on the smaller topups. Which I think it outrageous. But if they're going to credit the full current balance, it may be worth adding another $100 before switching, even if your balance is high-ish and has a long life. In my case I think expiry is imminent so I have to do something this week.

Thanks!

Presumably, they are transferring a "dollar" amount, and not a "minutes" amount. So, whatever remaining dollars you had in your SO account would be transferred to the new PC account. And, if you received "extra dollars" by way of that $100-->$125 top-up, that transfers as well. There's really no other logical way to do it. After all, the dollar balance in your account makes no distinction between the dollars you put in vs. the bonus dollars they gave you, or between dollars that will be used for talk airtime vs. dollars used for texting. It's just one single pile of dollars. (This is just my logical argument. I have not confirmed this with SO customer service.)

Dial *777 from your SO phone to check the expiry date of your minutes. It's free of charge.

I'm in Ottawa too. I think I'll just buy another $100 top-up this week for the better rate, and
then decide over the next couple of months whether I want to switch to PetroCan or
GoodToGo. On the other hand, if by the end of December it seems like there's a good
possibility that I'll be able to top-up online, then I might just stick with SO and hope for the
best.

Anyway, I've got some time to think about it.

Thank you, I think that's right and I agree with the logic.

That said, what I recall from when SO changed from 20c/min to 25c/min on the smaller topups, that they didn't give all outstanding balances a 25% bonus? That means all those topups they sold by promising 20c/min were retroactively changed to 25c/min, including those that would still cost 20c/min if bought today?!

Of course I'd be happy to be corrected, but that's an even more egregious maneuver (changing the price of already-sold minutes) than possibly losing a bit on the transfer to a different carrier. Though both would be bad.

This rumour is absolutely false. I was just talking to my source, and SpeakOut have no plans to pull out of Ontario AT ALL. Ontario is probably one of their largest customer bases, if not their biggest. Let's put that rumour to rest once and for all.
There will be an online solution for SpeakOut as well. It will start next year. They are working on it right now.
Stay tuned

Thanks, I found it through 611 which I assume (hope) is also free.

There will be an online solution for SpeakOut as well.

Is it likely to be 20c/min going forward?

I discovered my expiry is Nov 30/09 so is it safe to buy a top-up now and activate it around Nov 21? I'm allowing a few days to forget to do it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, I don't use this phone a lot as my Rogers 30c/min (for answering out of home area) isn't that much more. Maybe it's not worth getting a $100 topup at this point, maybe I should just get $75 (for the 20c/min) or even $25 (to extend my existing big balance, at a cost of course).

I don't think anyone in this thread posted what the date is for 7-11 no longer selling the topups in Ottawa. Didn't get a text message, so can anyone clarify? If it's Nov 1 I have to buy it (or get someone to buy it) soon!

Also, when we switch to PCM or G2G, do we keep the existing SIM?

Thanks!

611 should be free.

Also, once you buy your minutes, you have 90 days to apply them to your phone (according to my receipt). I also didn't get the text message, but it seems like to me that you won't be able to buy any top-up minutes from 7-11 stores in the Ottawa area after Oct. 31.

I didn't really need the new minutes right away, but I topped up today just to extend the use of my phone until I figure out my next move, plus the "bonus" minutes are still being offered.

I don't know about keeping the same SIM card. But it seems like to me, because it should only be fair, that any minutes you have would be transferred to either Petro or G2G.

I can't recommend what you do, either get all the minutes you can get now, or just get enough to extend the use of you phone for another year. It really depends on your situation and needs.

Also keep in mind, if you buy $75 or $100 of top-up now, the bonus minutes may not apply a few weeks from now.

There is an article about the Ottawa 7-11 sale to Quickie and SpeakOut in today's Ottawa Citizen:

I called and was told that the only options were:
1) Switch to Petro Canada at no charge
2) Switch to GoodToGo at no charge
3) Buy 7-11 top ups in Toronto (you on a visit or a friend/relative)

Only Petro Canada offers online top ups. Only 7-11 has 365 day expiry on top ups less than $100.

I am going to stick with SpeakOut for now since I still have 11 months to go!

You don't have to stick with SO just to keep your current balance or expiration date.

I was told I had until end of Dec to switch for free to either PetroCanada or GoodtoGo and that any current SO balance and expiry date will be honored. I have a very low usage phone with lots of money still in its account. I'm going to put $25 in my account now which will set its expiration date to next Oct, THEN I'll do the switch over to PetroCanada. That way I won't have to do a PetroCanada topup for another year and I only have to invest $25 now to keep the phone active for a whole year. I'll probably go with the $25 for 120 days option after that which works out to $75/year, not as good as SO which gives you a whole year for only $25 but its still better than another other pre-paid service out there.

I didn't ask the service rep. but I suspect that after the end of Dec, you won't be allowed to switch. Chances are you will have start a new account (i.e. buy a new PetroCanada or GoodToGo phone) and have your number moved. This would mean losing any money you have in your SO account. I think its better to switch now while they will honour your SO balance and expiration date.
