I recently joined the SO wireless craze and I am very happy with it so far. I put my SIM card into my Blackberry and I am on the $10/mo unlimited browsing plan. My questions are regarding my upcoming trip to Manitoba:
-When I make calls from Winnipeg to here (Surrey, BC), will my rate be $0.45/min?
-When I make calls in Winnipeg to other local numbers in Winnipeg, will my rate be $0.25/min or $0.45/min?
-When I browse the internet in Manitoba, will I get extra data charges for being out of province, or will my $10/mo data plan be enough?

Thanks in advance!
James

If your sim card was activated in Surrey, then all calls (regardless of where you are in Canada) back to Surrey would be deducted the local rate ($0.25).

However, if your phone is based in Surrey, and you are in Winterpeg (srry ) and you make calls to Winnipeg, then you are deducted the long distance rate ($0.45/minute)

As far as data goes, I'm not too familiar with that, so maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

I know it kind of seems backwards of other carriers, but that's the way SpeakOut operates. If you do a search of the forum, this issue was brought up not too long ago.

Data should be good to go anywhere in canada. As iamdrumming said, calls to your home area will be at 25 cents/min.

To add to iamdrumming's information, it appears (to me) that while the calls to Surrey are charged at local rates from anywhere in Canada, you will have to press "1" before when you're calling from far away (i.e. a call that would be LD if you were using a Rogers phone). And while calls from Winnipeg to Winnipeg will be charged at LD rates, you won't have to dial a "1".

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Also note that it's not just "Surrey", it's the whole 604 (and 778? or parts of 778?) area code.

Bottom line, keep an eye on your balance the first few times you try it.

I live in Victoria and have a SO phone with a Winnipeg phone number (Area Code 204) I can dial Area Code 204 numbers with the 1 or without it here in Victoria and it works either way. I sometimes do and sometimes don't get the message from Rogers warning me that I should have dialed the 1. Ether way the calls are connected and are charged at 25 cents per minute to any location in Manitoba, not just Winnipeg.

I can dial local 250 numbers while in Victoria without the 1 and they are still charged at 45 cents per minute.

My friend has a SO phone with a 250 area code and I once called SO customer service on her behalf to try to understand what would happen if she called a Victoria 778 number, and they couldn't answer. Their first reaction was that 778 was a Vancouver area code but I explained that it wasn't and they had no answer. I don't actually know anyone with a 778 area code number to do a test call.

Thanks for the info. I am back from Manitoba now with my own results. I placed no calls while I was out there, but I browsed the internet constantly. My balance did not change. So unlimited internet browsing is indeed country wide.
