I thought there might be experienced users of the speakout/7-eleven phones and cards so here's my questions:

1) Should I buy a SIM card so I can pick the phone I want – for e.g. I can buy any GSM phones that take the same network and insert the SIM card, then activate, right?

2) Just buy a promo offer 7-eleven offers such as a cheap phone for $20 off (current example) and the accompanying $50 of air time? If I want a better phone, I can buy a new phone and switch the SIM card, right?

The issue I have with #2 is I'm left with an extra phone and I assume they're difficult to sell even on here. Afterall, who wants the cheaper entry level phones and you're not going to get equal value.

But, I find option #1 to be hard, finding someone selling a card – no takes EMT or at least paypal? Also, I am not sure what is a good value. I think most are $5 cards that you need to activate and add more funds? People are asking $30 for a $5-value card?!? I don't get it. Can anyone explain and inform me what is a good deal?

If you have any advice or recommendations, please, by all means, add. Also, I'm not sure how to move around the forum. I think I have other posts but couldn't find them. lol!

I am not sure if this post is appropriate here but I hope it's on-topic and I offer to discuss good deals if I know of any. So far, I just note the $50 air time promo with $20 off the phone.

EDIT: if I buy the 1661 phone, can I take the SIM card out and put it in any GSM phone? It's just the compatibility I have to worry about right? That it's a GSM phone so phones on the same network and I can add funds at any 7-eleven store or where the vouchers are sold?

It's ultimately up to you whether to buy the phone/sim car package at a 7-Eleven store, or just buy a phone or sim card through this site. No one can "hold your hand" so to speak, and help you decide what value is. It's your money.

If you buy the 1661 phone, then you'll be able to take out the sim, and use it in another GSM phone. Keep in mind the new phone has to be unlocked, uses the North American (850/1900) GSM bands, or a Rogers branded phone should work with the service.

Yes. I know. But, I was hoping others who have done either method whether it was a smooth process or if one way tends to be a better deal than the other. That's all.

I guess it is a 'pick 'em' situation. Maybe a more convenient route is picking up the 7-eleven phone but then if one upgrades, you have a phone to sell.

I am confident that if I go with a Rogers-locked phone like the Nokia C3 I should be able to switch it with the 7-eleven SIM card. I will probably go this route unless someone replies to my 'WTB' posts.

Thanks for the reply/response. It's good to get some feedback so I have an idea and confirm these options.

Telephone, SpeakOut7Eleven just upgraded their service very recently. In fact it is so new that the FAQ and the self-serve information does not have the new information yet. Here it is:

-You need to buy a $25 credit at 711.
-Call the SpeakOut7Eleven customer service phoneline.
-Request that they send you a SIM card in the mail. They tell you it will take 2 weeks to arrive.
-The $25 credit is used up, but you will have a credit of $5 on your new SIM card.
-Insert into your own unlocked or Rogers networked phone
-Telephone numbers can be ported by calling customer service to request (only after you receive your SIM card)

I just did it yesterday! Used to be a Rogers Paygo customer, but at 35 cents a minute, plus you lose them after 30 days if you don't have a $10 auto deduct from your credit card, who needs them? Interestingly, recently I was traveling out of town and used my cellphone quite a bit. After I had used it approximately 10 mins, I would get messages from Rogers saying that the per minute rate for the rest of the day had dropped to 20 cents. Too little, too late Rogers! Maybe you should have considered reducing your per minute rate and the expiry date of you minutes BEFORE the market saw entry of players such as SpeakOut and Wind Mobile, etc. I am happy to have ditched that overpriced hot potato! Good riddance and I look forward to the 365 day expiry policy of SpeakOut minutes. Hurray for SpeakOut.

Speak Out reception should be the same as Fido and Rogers (different phones notwithstanding) since it runs on the same network.

I'm not having much luck finding enough sellers with sim cards so far. I don't really want the phone as I would buy one later and also shipping will probably put it a bit higher price so I only want the sim card.

I read on here that you can order it from 7-eleven. Can someone let me know how much it would cost?

It seems that SIM cards on here are selling for about $30 when they become available. I was wondering what they'd be in the store, then. Also, the 2-3 wk waiting period isn't good but I want to confirm there's an option to order them from the store.

I also am a bit wary of buying online, too.

I would like to buy a phone separate or locally and then unlock the phone and add the sim card.

Well, I was at the same position as the OP a few days ago. My thinking is this:
Unless you find someone close to you who can sell you an unactivated card for about $25, it is not worth the trouble. Now, whether to buy just a SIM card or phone-SIM, if you think you are going to spend about $50 in a year, the difference is only $14 (50 for the voucher+39 for the phone, vs. 50 for the voucher+25 for the SIM).

I did purchase the phone plus the $50 voucher, which I have not activated yet (I am still on the initial $5!). The phone is still new, in its box... at least I could use its battery in another Nokia I have...

You can always sell the phone on kijiji. There are plenty of willing buyers that just dropped their old Rogers phone in the toilet!
