Major benefit of speakout is their extended local calling area.
I live in 519 area code but work and play in 416 and 905 areas. Speakout allows my calls from 416 to and from 519/905 to be local calls.

Im in Ontario for 2-3 weeks per year on business. The rest of the year I wouldn't use the phone. What would you recommend for me?

Get a Speakout phone.

Airtime has a 365 day expiry, and the minimum airtime you have to buy is $25. There are a few other companies that have a 365 day expiry, but you have to buy a minimum of $100 worth of airtime. Plus Speakout's rates will be among the lowest you'll find for your use.

So either buy a Speakout phone from 7-11 (and the SIM will be included) or buy a SIM from someone on this forum and use your own GSM phone.

I am in Ontario and will use the phone regularly during the day approx 10 minutes weekday.

If I go with a speakout do I have to give them my credit card no.?

I do not want any way for them to bill me later. Just want to walk in pay for the phone and walk away adding time when I require..

Is this possible?

You buy the phone and the airtime at 7-11 - you pay cash or use credit card to pay for this at store - You do NOT have to give SO anything as is a prepaid phone. U just purchase more airtime as needed.

You are talking about using approx 200 minutes per month - this will cost you at least $40 month if you buy the $75 or $100 airtime voucher ( gets you local calls at equiv. of 20 cents minute) or $50 if you buy the $25 or $50 topups. Would u not be better off getting a plan if u will be using this much - most people that use SO are not volume users? Your call

Thanks I will think about it but was probably high in my estimate. Just do not trust the plans as it seems like a lot of issues with exit fees and extras that you have access to but never know the true cost till you use them.. Never trusted phone companies... can always switch later I guess...

Hi

I am in Canada, St Andrews - New Brunswick, for 3 non-consecutive months a year. The rest of the time I am in Europe. Which pay-as-you go plan would you recommend?

Best
Stephen

SpeakOut, providing there are 7-11 stores in NB. Otherwise PetroCanada Mobile. With SO you can get as little as $25 airtime that lasts 365 days. With PCM you need to spend $100 to get 365 days.

I'll be travelling across Canada in August and I was wondering who should I be going with? Does Speakout works in every province?

Speak Out works off the Rogers network, so if there is Rogers coverage, then Speak Out will work. However, I have found coverage can be spotty, especially when going through the prairies. Best thing would be to check the coverage maps of each provider.

Hi everybody. A question: when you speak about minute usage, do you mean outgoing minutes or outgoing + incoming minutes?

I come from Europe, and I had the greatest shock (and bill) when I got to know that carriers here make you pay for incoming calls. No carrier in Europe does that (unless you are abroad, then you pay the difference between your country and the country you're visiting).

Welcome to Canada! Airtime is deducted, regardless if the call is outgoing or incoming.

Does any of these carriers offer buying a sim card without the phone? To my surprise, 7-11 requires you to buy the phone... In Europe, you can just go get the sim card and use your existing (assuming it is compatible of course) phone. Is this possible with any of the carriers in Canada?

No, you have to buy the package (sim and phone). I do not know of any prepaid company in Canada that allows you to just buy the sim.
You really can't compare Europe and Canada. Like the saying goes, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

While you can't buy a Rogers SIM from Robbers, you can buy one on eBay. Same for Fido. And of course, you can buy SO and sometimes PCM SIMs from people on this forum.

I have heard of people walking into Rogers stores and inquiring about buying a SIM card. Although it is unadvertised, Rogers might sell you a prepaid SIM card for $40 with $10 of included airtime.

I have a Rogers cell phone and I am just finishing a 3 year plan. I want to go Payasyougo. Can I keep my same phone number? Can I use my Rogers phone with a different provider? If not, why not?

1. Yes, you can port your number to SpeakOut. Read post # 16 on the home page of this site.
2. Yes, a Rogers phone will work with a SpeaKout SIM, even if the phone is locked to Rogers. However, a Fido phone that's locked will not work.

Yes and yes, however you will need a SO SIM if you want SO service or a PCM SIM if you want service from them. You can`t buy these SIMs individually from SO or PCM. You can buy them from people who sell them here, on eBay, etc. Then you`ll have to call SO or PCM and have them port your old Rogers number over to that SIM.

I'm going to Canada and am only going to be there for 3 months (June, July, August) for work. Which service would be best for me? I would use about 500 minutes and most of those would be called to the United States to keep in touch. Also i would want plenty of texts and an unlimited data plan so i can use a GPS on my phone. (Job requires GPS)
