August and September 2008 Promotion

I dropped in at my local 7-11 today to check out the phones, since I need to replace the old Siemens C or A56 phone my wife has on Paygo - I can't find a new battery for this terrific little phone.

FWIW - the store manager suggested I could wait until August when they will have another free phone promotion like they had last year. She said it would be a better phone than the 1600, which I have myself right now.

I am taking this with a grain of salt since there has been much suspect information given out by store staff. But I am holding off my purchase for 4 weeks anyway in case it is true.

I asked about this promotion at my local 7-11 today and the guy behind the counter asked me if I wanted to buy some weed. Has this happened to anyone else recently?

Can anyone confirm the free phone promotion? My contract is expiring next month and I would like to switch to prepaid.

I'm sure the users will let us know as soon as they can...seems that Speakout often doesn't let the cat out of the bag until the promotion is underway!

I need a new phone as mine just went though the washing machine. Still works, but not great.

saw this on another forum:

Yes go into any 7-Eleven in your area and pickup a SpeakOut phone. We have entry level models starting at $74.00 and include $5.00 of start-up airtime, are precharged and preactivated with preassigned phone numbers. No need to fiddle around with SIM cards as the are already installed.

For more information on our handset selection go to our SpeakOut Canada web page http://www.speakout7eleven.ca

I can also tell you that starting August 1st we will start a promotion "Purchase $100 SpeakOut airtime receive a FREE SpeakOut Nokia 1600 or Nokia 1208 plus applicable taxes or $74.00 off ANY available SpeakOut phone" that would be worth waiting for.

A bit too late.

Also with the price hike not sure how many people are still keen to get into SO when there are other better alternatives.

Are there any other alternatives that offer a 20cent airtime rate besides PCM?

Thanks Steve but I have trolled the net and got the wrong battery sent from California with weeks of phone calls at my expense to get a refund and I am out the shipping costs. I have learned that there is a confusion in the aftermarket about the right battery for this model. I finally did get the right battery from another online firm but it has about 50% of the capacity of the original battery. I am moving on - no need to spend more time on this one!

Yeah, it is interesting about the profit margin.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it looks like it's costing the stores around $62 for each Nokia 1208 package.

At that price it's cheaper for the 7-11 store owners to buy the 1208 from a PetroCanada around the corner for $49!

I guess the profit margin means the margin for whole thing: phone and airtime card together.

To Kevin and Iuli,

The SpeakOut price hike doesn't really affect people taking advantage of the (hopefully) August promo, since those people are buying a $100 phone card.

Remember, with a $100 phone card the effective price is $.20 per min (with that crazy math they end up using).

In fact, if that crazy math is correct, the effective price per SMS and the monthly 911 fee is lower on SO. That plus a free phone, so it's still a pretty good deal.
