Thanks for starting this thread.

For those who are looking at the entry level phone (typically ~$59) you can also take advantage of the ongoing promotion that is $20 off any phone with a $50 airtime purchase. It's slightly less of a savings, but with half of the airtime commitment.

So are there any opinons on whether it's worth it to pay the extra 15 or 20 bucks for the more expensive phones? I'm a grown man who's never owned a cell phone before, so treat me gently.

It all depends on the features you want in a phone. If you just do some talking, and don't want the web, a basic phone will do. Keep in mind that you are able to use any unlocked GSM phone (that uses the North American bands) with SpeakOut. So, if you get a SpeakOut sim, just pop it in any unlocked phone.

It all comes to features and performance though.

In all honesty I would spend the extra money & get the best one you can afford.
You can just opt for the cheapest phone 7-11 offers (Nokia 1661) but it's not that great for a complete newbie.

Don't get me wrong it has plenty of features and a long battery life, but then again so do most Nokia's.
It is slippery in the hands & the number keys are very tiny. Great price @$29. If you do buy it, make sure you get a case for it.

Handle each of the demonstration phones available In store.

Or like iamdrumming said, decide on features you can live with or without, then buy any unlocked phone & slip a 7-11 Sim into it.

Sims are $25

My daughter lost her speakout phone and just picked up the Nokia C3 at half off, very decent phone for $60 including the SIM card, so really $35... nice deal.

^ I'm in Vancouver. Tried to buy $100 airtime along with the Nokia C3 today. The woman scanned the phone and told me it doesn't qualify for the 50% discount promo. Booooo :[

The promo is still on,, the clerk should scan the phone again after the $100 is selected. When my 711 just scanned the phone it obviously didn't show a discount, only after the $100 was on the bill. Try again…

Tried as you suggested, but to no avail. Was told to come back April 1st and the system would pick up on the discount then.

Came back April 1st. No discount. Was told the register is connected to head office (?!) and they have already let them know the discount wasn't going through.

Tried another 7-Eleven; they don't even carry the Nokia C3. Tried yet another 7-Eleven; they said the discount ended last month (even though the Speakout website just updated their site with a specific Nokia C3 promo that spells out the discount and the end date of the promo).

FML! Maybe I should just take the plunge and get an iphone. :[

Ha. I actually DID call two of the 7-Elevens in advance and verified that (1) they had the Nokia C3 and (2) it qualified for the promotion. Both times I was told they qualified, both times I went to the store, and both times I left empty handed. Plus, prior to calling the 7-Elevens, I even contacted Speakout and got this reply:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting SpeakOut Wireless. The current promotion of Buy $100 voucher and get 50% off is valid for any phone. Including the C3!

AskSpeakOut

Fun times! *eyeroll*

I don't know how else I can help, I can't believe the runaround you guys are getting. They're not entering it correctly at the store.

C3 promotion

You even get an addtional $40 off for data and unlimited text for the first two months that I didn't get! That makes the phone free if you take the sim card into account.

Ok got this email from Speakout today…

…..This was a glitch in our POS systems that dropped the promotional offer
from our systems. This has now been corrected and we apologize for the
inconvenience this caused our customers…..

Maybe I'll give one more try……

... EDIT...Ok got C3 today(Apr 5)...So far it's great !, very happy.
