Registered on Google Calendar today and I received a confirmation code. So far so good - hoping that I can start receiving SMS reminders!

A cool side note, Google Calendar supports importing of Events data from Facebook - it can monitor your Facebook account and update itself as you receive events invites and accept them. Turning on event reminders in Google Calendar should theoretically then send you Facebook event reminders to your SO phone.

I just registered for their service today - so haven't tested any of this yet other than receiving the confirmation code from Google.

The Google Calendar one is the best one right now. Just tested today (Sep. 18th, 2008).

Create a GMail or GCalendar account, under Settings make sure to set up "Mobile notification", select "Rogers" as the carrier; type in your phone #, it will send you a message with a code (actually works!), type in the code from your phone's message into Google Calendar, and voila! Your phone is set up to receive messages from Google!

Plan a meeting a week from now and set it to send a SMS notification, so in a week's time, you'll get a text message saying "YOU HAVE A MEETING!" or whatever your message was.

Have fun, it only costs you 5 cents to send messages to yourself, lol. at least now you won't forget that important birthday/anniversary/whatever

This may be a plesant side-effect of wireless number portability. Before WNP carriers could instantly tell if you were their customer based on the area code and exchange, e.g. 519-501-0000 to 519-509-9999 were known to be Bell Mobility numbers. But now it's impossible to say without doing a database lookup on the exact number. I wouldn't be surprised if Telus (and other carriers) have opened up their web-based SMS send function to all numbers because they can't yet tell who is their's and who isn't.

Conclusion: If my theory is correct, then this "feature" may not last long.

Set your phone details up with your speakout details and have Google send the notification text to your phone. You will see that it works!

I have already emailed Google.. but haven't gotten a response asking them the EXACT address in which the txt are being sent. Please do the same too and maybe eventually one of us will get the right response.

Apparently, the service provider for 7-11 in Canada is Rogers. I believe you can send a text from your PC by going to http://www.shoprogers.com/wire.....endpcs.asp and entering the required info.
