I'll add to this thread in case anyone else gets the "SIM card registration failed" message on their 5310 (or other phone). I was getting this error and the phone wouldn't call 611, which was how I had thought I remembered activating my previous one. Turns out in the instructions 😳 it does say to call the customer service number from a landline to activate. That worked! Still, a better error message might be more helpful...

I got a Speakout phone that wouldn't activate so I called tech support. It turned out that the phone was refurbished but it's number was canceled so it couldn't be activated again. I exchanged it.

Thanks. I thought they came already activated. Now I have activated it and it was a breeze with the Rogers phone. I hope this is a lot more affordable than my Bell account. I only ever use about 40 minutes a month and I was paying about $30/month for the last year on a contract.

I don't think you activated the speakout SIM. Just by taking the sim card of the speakout phone and putting it into your Rogers phone does not automatically mean that it will work. The instructions should be in the phone box. It should only take a minute.

I bought a phone over the weekend, a Nokia 5300. It was previously used on the Rogers network. Came with no SIM. Today I bought a SO phone (nokia 1661) and took the SIM card out and popped it into the 5300. Previously, the 5300 had a permanent message in the upper part of the screen about 'no sim inserted'. That is now gone but when I power up the phone it says, 'sim registration failed.' I cannot get service. What is wrong? If I try the sim card in the SO phone will it still port easily to the Rogers 5300 phone? Will I have to unlock the 5300? Any advice will be appreciated.
None of the SO phones appeal because of their poor cameras and lack of MP3's so I really want to be able to use a different GSM phone with this service. Thanks.
