I switched to a new provider (Wind), and ported my SpeakOut number to my new account. My dad recently asked for my old SpeakOut phone, so I gave it to him, expecting that he could just activate a new account with the old phone. Apparently not -- he's telling me:

"I tried to activate your old phone but since you took the phone number with you the sim card is no longer useful. If you would have asked speakout for a new number to keep the account active it would have worked however now it is dead and so to the SIM card. For $25 plus a phone time voucher they will send me a new SIM card."

Is this correct? Can he not just ask to activate a new account with the same SIM? Is there a way to do this? Seems pretty wasteful to buy a new card when the old hardware should work just fine.

SPK is correct. Buy a new SIM...I have done that with my two other phones.
When I will port my 3rd to Telus then that SIM will be useless.
