Groundspeak's the one he was using too. So in theory, I should be able to get UMB, get the app and have an up and running geocaching GPS for $10 a month. Sweet. One less piece of hardware to carry around.

I use Geocaching by Groundspeak on an iPhone with UMB. Used it in the mountains this weekend and it was good for about 5 hours of geocaching before the battery ran down.

That's exactly what I'm hoping to find out here. Is there someone out there that's already got this app working their SO phone with UMB?

The battery drain question comes from how much and how often data is coming down to the phone for the app. Is the geocaching app constantly talking to the satellites/towers (whatever it uses) or does it cache the data locally and/or does the app only update every x number of seconds vs constantly? If the GPS's heavy network traffic drains the battery of the phone quickly, maybe I'll just break down and look at buying a real GPS. I'm just hoping to consolidate and carry as few electronic devices as possible.
