Excellent - That's exactly the kind info I was looking for. Groundspeak's the one he was using too. So in theory, I should be able to get UMB, get the app and have an up and running geocaching GPS for $10 a month. Sweet. One less piece of hardware to carry around.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Hi

I use Geocaching by Groundspeak on an iPhone with UMB. Used it in the mountains this weekend and it was good for about 5 hours of geocaching before the battery ran down.

My friend showed me his geoaching app on his Android phone. It got me thinking – has anyone tried using geocaching with SO's UMB? I'm just curious if it will work. It would be nice if it did. If it does work, how much of a drain is it on the battery?

Thanks for the help.

I don't know if it uses http/https or some other port. That's exactly what I'm hoping to find out here. Is there someone out there that's already got this app working their SO phone with UMB?

The battery drain question comes from how much and how often data is coming down to the phone for the app. Is the geocaching app constantly talking to the satellites/towers (whatever it uses) or does it cache the data locally and/or does the app only update every x number of seconds vs constantly? If the GPS's heavy network traffic drains the battery of the phone quickly, maybe I'll just break down and look at buying a real GPS. I'm just hoping to consolidate and carry as few electronic devices as possible.

if your data feed is through http/https, why not ? As for battery drain, I don't think it has anything to do with UMB.
