I had a heck of a time trying to register my phone because the packaging was missing the activation code. I called the good people at Speakout, and the operator was able to register the phone by the markings on the SIM card.

Nowadays you have to call in to activate your phone (or more accurately, the SIM card). A phone number is assigned to you at that time.
