most app works especially on iOS(and Android ics+) because http now becomes the mother of all protocol(with very good reason as that is the sure port that is almost never block by any firewall).

the exceptions are XMPP based IM like iMessage, IMAP and media oriented things that needs UDP.

Push of course would not work as it requires long running socket.

Well, just to follow up here, I wound up purchasing the $10 a month UWB offering from PetroCanada Mobility (my current provider–I'm going to be switching to SpeakOut in June) just to test it out. I presume that PetroCanada's UWB is pretty much the same, if not exactly the same, as SpeakOut's?

Anyway, after getting the correct APN settings into my iPhone with the unlockit.co.nz app, I have to say, I'm impressed. It seems to me that UWB (at least PetroCanada's flavour of it) lies somewhere between true data and mere "web browsing, nothing more."

Things that don't work over 3G: iMessage, installing apps, and my regular IMAP email through the Mail app. Also, I don't think Photo Stream is working (at least, the test photo I just took hasn't appeared yet).

However, just about everything else I've tried does work. I get voice navigation and downloaded maps with Google Maps/Apple Maps/CoPilot GPS; the Facebook/Twitter/YouTube/Instagram apps work, my Gmail app works, my iTunes Match works via the Music app, my RBC online banking app works, Crackle works, and so on.

$10 for unlimited "mostly data", as opposed to "full data" or "just browsing", strikes me as an excellent deal.

Well, I guess it's somewhat limited rather than unlimited, right? 2GB? Even so, that's still well within reasonable usage for $10, IMO.

"Unlimited browsing plan" is a little bit misleading IMO. I expect I will be able to access any website without any problem, but nope, websites that require special ports won't work. Website like cpanel td Waterhouse or any URL like http://website.tld:1234

Lots of png won't load properly also images with a bit bigger size look pixelated

Last but not least, unlimited is not really unlimited but I think we all know that

actually it's worst than a browsing plan.

there are the problems:
- most ports won't work (except 80, 443)
- sometimes speed is very slow (30mb/s)
- image compression (when you visit a website, the images you download look pixelated)

I guess few months later I'll switch to public mobile/wind mobile/mobilicity to get a real data plan.

Good for you! And you get to pay real data plan rates. Some of us feel this $10 a month deal is an excellent value. Image compression is no big deal, hell I'd be happy if they left them off most pages and just put a link I can click if I really want to see the thing. It's Rogers that does that compression, has nothing to do with SpeakOut. Port 80 and 443 do everything I need. I have no issues with speed, which that has nothing to do with Speakout, a 2G provider. If you get better than 2G you're getting a bonus. I get 4G speeds on my tablet all the time. All in all, it is worth every cent of the paltry 10 bucks a month it costs.

Bear with me here, as believe it or not I'm just getting into iPhone and I've never been on any cellphone plans

Is the UWB that is offered with Speakout the same as regular data plans that you might find with Bell, Telus, Rogers, etc? If not…can someone summarize the main differences in terms of what major types of things would not work on Speakout that WOULD work on a regular data plan?

Like, can I use online GPS apps with UWB (i.e. be able to download road maps on the fly as I travel)? use the Facebook app? the Mail app to check my Gmail account?
