Hi Everyone,
this is my first post, so if I leave something out just ask.

I have an old Rogers 2g (1st gen) 8Gig Iphone, the one with the silver on the back (model MA712LL )
Version 3.1.2 with blackra1n and Cydia
Just added unlimited browsing to my SO and made the changes listed by Glen Lalonde
http://www.binarysearchtree.com

I can now browse (which is slower (much) than WiFi)
No email unless it it browser based like Gmail (so I can send and receive when I need too)
Here is a list of some applications that work:
Safari seems to work but some websites look a little strange
Google mobile apps
TMZ app (I know stop laughing)
My calendar sync'd with Google seems to update in the background
MyNearest
Yahoo Mobile
Yahoo Messenger
Craigsphone
Edit ** All Storm8 games are NOT playable
Flixter (trailers play too slow to watch)
Yp.Ca
Scanner 911 (but a lot of buffering)
Coffee Finder
Hotels Near me (which actually only open hotels.com/iphone )
Urban Spoon (but the shake never finished but browsing and search worked)
Weather
Stocks
Forbes II
Flight

So far I have restored the phone and unlocked it again and made the Speakout profile and had Speakout reset my data package thinking a new hanshake from the server might do it but no luck.

Unlocked Fido iphone 3G with Speakout profile installed with the 3G turned off and the Edge icon is on. And error code: Could not activate cellular network: PDP authentication failure

Thanks a lot for your help so far.

I would like to use an iphone 3GS with my SO sim without unlocking. Does anyone know if it is possible to reactivate a used iphone without a rogers contract? I have been searching the internet to find details and the impression I am getting is that it may not work. Thanks for any help you can give.

if Its a Rogers iphone it will work just pop your SO sim in it and make sure you turn off the 3g in settings of the phone and it will work

I accidentally (ignorantly would be the better word) upgraded my iphone to 3.1 (and the 5.11.07 baseband). once i realized that the phone needed activation, i managed to downgrade to 3.0 and jailbreak my phone..

So now my iphone works pretty much as a ipod touch.. Now they cant unlock the new baseband yet but from what i have read, I dont need to unlock a rogers phone to work with SO.. so i bought a SO phone and activated it... but when i put the sim card in my iphone, i cant get service...

3G is turned off, i see "Rogers 4.0" listed as the carrier.. but it just says "no service" and i cant make any calls..

Anyone have any ideas to help me?

So I got my friend to help me upgrade my Iphone 3gs 16gb to a 32gb from rogers, looks like I'll be waiting anouther few weeks to get the Iphone (it took so much controlled not to open the 16gb package! haha). anyways my new question is pretty much exactly the same as Misato. When i get my 32gb 3gs it will be streight from the package from rogers. I also got a free rogers pay as I go sim card (which i have no intention on using). but my question is, if i never use a rogers sim card, will it still be locked to rogers? cause I also heard that rogers was supposed to let people buy the Iphone 3gs without a contract, if so, shouldn't they be keeping it unlocked? also I plan to study in spain next winter-spring, whats the best way to get it unlocked if it is locked. sorry for all the questions, I just like to know the most about everything so that I am well informed.

Thanks

I just got a sealed Rogers iPhone 3GS. Will my SO SIM (from my old phone) work in it instantly? Do I need to activate the phone and if so, can it be done with my SO SIM?

What is the best/easiest way to activate the phone? Do I need to call Rogers or go through itunes, or can I simply stick a Rogers activated SIM in the phone?

Thank you!

thanks Darthrider.

also, i read at the top of the page that the phone has to be "activated" through rogers. my phone is from rogers (i bought it off a friend who upgraded, but then decided he rather have the money then the 3gs). The Iphone is unopened, still in the original packaging. Do i need to get him to activate it for me, or can i just open the package, register it with itunes, and slap in my Speakout SIM?

another thing is. Because my phone is only 16g, and not 32g. I've been wanting to upgrade (so i haven't opened the package). Do you think the Apple store would take it back and let me pay extra for the 32g, or do i have to get my friend to help me go through Rogers.

another question, if It's and unopened package from rogers, does it mean it's already locked to rogers?

thanks for the info.

If you were actually connected to EDGE, the E would show up with a circle around it. Because there's no data on Speakout, you will never actually be connected to the network. You may sometimes see a small white dot in that area as well, it is the same thing. Once you have taken the rogers SIM out, there is no chance of charges to that account. The phone is only associated with that account while the SIM is inside.

Hello again,

I picked up an iphone through my wife's Rogers account. She was entitled to a hardware upgrade. We activated it through her sim card and called tech support to have all the data blocked. I turned off the 3G setting and put in the Speakout sim card and it works. However, we're noticing that when we are away from wifi, an E shows up in the top left corner beside where it says Speakout. Because we don't have a data plan on the Rogers account (we put the Rogers sim card back in the old phone) the iphone might still connect to the Edge network even with the Speakout sim inside, and cause some big charges to the Rogers account.

Have you had any issues with this E and charges, or is your phone off contract making this a non-issue?

Thanks!

The sim just worked instantly when put into the phone, I didn't have to do anything to set it up. I have some experience with Iphone activations. Google a program called Ziphone and you should find some tutorials. There are no data charges because speakout doesn't offer data. This means that you have to be in a wifi enabled area to use things like internet & email. I seem to have some limited GPS service even when out of wifi range, but i don't think that has anything to do with speakout, and it doesn't cost anything.

Thanks for the replies. Johanna, when you activated the iphone 3G, did you have the speakout sim card in there or is it possible to activate it through itunes without a sim card? Also, is it safe to assume you haven't had any problems with data charges from Rogers (if it's a Rogers phone) because Speakout doesn't have any data options available?
