Some carriers have set up agreements to allow other carriers to use foreign SIM. It is not unlike Rogers allowing Speakout to use their network when you think of it. If there is no agreement, there is no service.

Of course, some carriers have this habit of charging absurd rates, which benefits both carriers handsomely. It is nice that Speakout does not have that arrangement.

We've all heard horror stories about people who travel to exotic lands and forget to disable data roaming, only to return home to phone bills in the thousands of dollars. My question is, if I were to take my iPhone abroad, would I have access to foreign data networks? Obviously I couldn't be billed as Speakout has no idea who I am. How exactly does data roaming work? Obviously if I walk around Toronto, my phone just doesn't connect to random data networks, so why does this seem to happen in foreign countries? Just having a hard time figuring out how this roaming thing works?
