I think Artek was suggesting was to give the CSR a Rogers SIM serial number, so that they attempt to activate said Rogers SIM on their speakout wireless service (with whatever phone number assigned to it).

In which case the simplest way to find out is to call SO CSR and try.

I'm skeptical that this will work because the SIM serial number contains information that probably distinguishes between Rogers and SO (ztar.)

Artek said:

Than... would it not be possible to, theoretically, call up 7elev customer service and give them the # of the Rogers SIM and have them activate it under their service?

That would fall under the heading of "porting" the phone number currently assigned to the Rogers SIM to Speakout. If the SIM isn't already active under a Rogers plan, then it usually can't be ported over, as Speakout won't (or can't) just grab a new phone number out of the air; they only have the ones that are designated for their use.

Since Speakout phones are already "activated" when they're put in the box, and are just waiting for the first connect to start the usage timers, I very much doubt if they can (or will) activate any old SIM someone has lying around.

Does anyone know if this worked?.....I mean calling 7-11 CS with a Rogers SIM #, and just having the service activated with 7-11?

My (rather limited) experience with cellphone service providers that use GSM/SIMs is that they prefer to give you a brand new SIM of theirs instead of reactivating an old SIM, even if it's a SIM from the same company.

However, it is definitely worth a try. Call up SpeakOut customer service and if this works you'll be a hero beloved by everyone on this list. And if it doesn't, then you just spent 2 minutes answering your question, no biggie.

The "network lock" you usually hear about, like "This phone only works with Fido", is because that phone will be hard-coded to only connect (with no "roaming" charges) to network # 302-370 (Fido), not 302-720 (Rogers).

Since Speakout's contract is to make use of the full Rogers network, any unlocked or Rogers-locked phone will work.
A Fido-locked phone should not work.
