Yes, and unlocked phone will work for use in the USA. Keep in mind that the phone must use the North American 850/1900 GSM bands. As far as I know all of the phones currently sold by SpeakOut in Canada are locked, so your best bet would be to find an unlocked phone elsewhere, or get a prepaid phone package while in the USA.

jbond,

No where on the official SpeakOut site does it say you can use your phone in the USA. Here's a couple of copy and pastes from the official site:

"Can I use my SpeakOut phone anywhere in the world?

Calls can be made from within Canada to anywhere in the world. Long distance rates apply (plus per minute airtime rates). See the Long Distance Chart for more information.

You cannot make calls from within the U.S. or from elsewhere outside of Canada as SpeakOut in Canada does not provide roaming services."

Read especially the second statement where it clearly says you can not use the phone outside of Canada. SpeakOut in Canada does NOT provide roaming.

One more copy and paste, similar to yours:

"Text Messaging
Outgoing Text Messages:
10c to Canadian Wireless Numbers
10c to US Wireless Numbers
25c to International Wireless Numbers"

All those rates are outgoing, while your phone is in Canada. The Canadian SpeakOut service only works in Canada.

I guess this statement in the FAQ is kind of misleading:
"Long distance or roaming CAN or US call 0.45″

SO should update this statement. Thanks all for the replies.

Please read FAQ # 4, especially the last sentence:

"You cannot make calls with your Canadian 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless phone if you are in the US."

You should post that suggestion to the Peter, the owner of this site in the "Site feedback and suggestions" forum. The home/faq page is a general guide, and there will be some errors on that page from time to time. We are all just customers of SpeakOut. This site is never the final word on SpeakOut Wireless in Canada. Only SpeakOut themselves are.

If you have any questions, the first place you should go is the official SpeakOut site, found here:

http://speakout7eleven.ca/

It has lots of great information on it, and their word is the final word, as they are the official provider.

According to SO site FAQ on rate in US:
Summary of rates

Long distance or roaming CAN or US call 0.45
Receive txt Free
Send CAN txt 0.10
Send US txt 0.10
Send INTL txt 0.25
Monthly 911 0.99

It said above that the roam and text are avialble in the US but I was in Vegas last week, my Nokia 2720 has no signal what so ever - NIL. So if SO is not available in US why list the rate on SO faq sheet?
Anyone has any experience on this?
