I’m a very occasional cell phone user and recently bought a new phone. While surfing speakout portal I came across their 30 day data plan for $10. I have never used data on a cell phone previously, so I thought I’d give it a try. I assumed, perhaps foolishly, that the plan would end after 30 days, only to find it my account had been deducted following the 30 days, and the plan continued.
Although the agreement spells out how to cancel a plan, nowhere does it say plans are automatically renewed. I’ve been very happy with the talk and text plans for many years, it’s so disappointing to discover this.

It's all relative. SpeakOut might not have good coverage for you, but they have great coverage where I am, and better coverage that Public Mobile/Telus.

As for being not competitive, I disagree. The lowest priced plan at Public Mobile is $15/month ($180.00 a year). SpeakOut starts at $25 a YEAR.

As good as the public mobile I just signed up for and more data...almost chose it and cancelled public mobile.. Then read the fine print. New activations only and only applies to first 3 months(though the language is more confusing).. Oh well Public Mobile it is.

Keeping Speakout for the $25 / year. just not sure what I will use it for.

Contacted Speakout and was told it was a manufacturers issue. Tried my other new Umidigi phone and same issue. I then tried my Speakout SIM without the data plan and had Speakout add the data plan to that SIM and it worked!! So how is it a manufacturer's problem. It is my problem because I have Speakout! I have decided to move the phone to the $15 Public Mobility that has 100 minutes and 250 data a month.

That's good to know. You didn't say who you complained to, but I would put in a complaint with SpeakOut's head office.
You can also buy a phone right from the official SpeakOut site.
In the future, it might be better just to buy a sim card, rather than a phone. You can use your own phone with SpeakOut, as long as it's unlocked (or locked to Rogers).

I have been with SO for many years and had never had need to call their customer service. Today I have a simple question and call their 1866 and man, it was UNBELIEVABLE ! The CSR name is Ingrid. She was EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional to the point that you'd think she was joking! I sent in a complaint to SO and ask they listen to the recording (hope they have one as they claimed) and see for themselves. I live in Canada and this kind of behavior from a CS would be a joke and laugh stock. She is a scar on 711 company's face.
Anyway, my question is about porting in from Koodo. I have 3 phones under my account already but I plan to port in a 4th one (an easy way to cancel koodo without calling them). I understand I need to activate my SIM and get a new number first. Question is do I have to top it up, as second step, before I fill the porting form? I do not plan to keep the 4th number so I do not want to top it up.

I spend so much time trying to activate the phone I almost gave up . You call the number and half the time you get disconnected or doesn't even allow you to call. Another thing what does the internet have to do with a cell phone service, their auto responds keep mentioning to use their website , well I don't have a PC or do I have the internet and why would it matter . I don't want the internet but rather a phone service . Why is it to speak with a supervisor it takes one to 3 days? why can't people just connect with a supervisor when need be like all else companies do ... I will never use them again once my time is up. Bad customer services

I only get reminders if a plan date is coming up for renewal. It tells me to make sure that I have sufficient funds or time retaining on the funds balance or the plan would not be renewed. This makes sense from a profit standpoint in that it ensures they will continue to get monthly revenue. Those on pay as you go don't make them as much money so it is better for them to let the balance expire so they get some free money. Not particularly ethical, but in the current business environment, ethics and profits rarely go hand in hand.
