I had the 1661 for a year before upgrading to the 5130 b/c i wanted some more features like a camera etc.. i can say that i was pleased with the 1661 for the money. it's a basic, decent little phone, if not a little cheaply made. however, some of that cheap, simplicity can come in handy:

i accidentally went for a swim with the 1661 in my pocket. it was turned on but of course when i got out it was off and would not work. i took it apart and left it out to dry for about 2 days. when it appeared to be dry and put it back together and - voila! - it continued to work perfectly. not bad for the $30 i paid for it.

on the other hand, my cousin did the same thing with his blackberry and it is now toast, gonzo.

i would continue to recommend the 1661 for someone who wants a simple phone that they won't use to much.

I consider the 1661 one of Nokia's and Speakout's worst phones. The audio is tinny and the speaker phone is not that great. The UI is not an improvement Being locked is not a plus. Yet with all that criticism, it is still a good phone. It is a tough phone. Reliable also. And as said, reception is superior. It is very hard to get such a solid phone at that price point. I still think the Nokia 1208 and 1100 are much better phones, but Nokia does not make them anymore.

Welcome to the site! Thanks for your review of the 1661. I have one also, and while basic, I also agree it is a good little phone.

I received this rather ubiquitous little phone just two days ago (for free) after purchasing $100 of airtime. I was planning to immediately dump it and only really wanted the SIM card. The phone however (although lacking features) performs in an exemplary manner, in the weak signal area where I live. It hangs on to a signal where everything else (barring my old Blackberry) fails. Needless to say I plan on using it - it's a real keeper IMO.

Greetings to all, this is my first post. I have dumped my expensive Telus plan (my contract recently expired) for Speakout. Currently I am not disappointed.

Cheers
David
