First off, if you're going to use a prepaid service, you're probably not going to use it too often (since the costs can add up quickly. Most Speakout users are looking for a good, basic, inexpensive phone - and the Nokia 1208 fits that bill perfectly.

Also, all cellphone cameras stink. You'll get way better pictures from a 6 year old 2 megapixel digital camera. That being said, the Nokia N95 seems to have the best cellphone camera out there.

I know what you mean by cellphone reviews. 99% of the reviews out there for any camera say the exact same thing: "This camera is wonderful, it has a nice camera, and it comes in all sorts of colours! Buy it now!". None of them even begin to talk about what is important in a cellphone - stuff like reception, call quality, etc etc.

One noteable exception is Steve Punter's webpage. This guy is awesome. He looks at all the important stuff on a cellphone.

http://www.arcx.com/sites/index.htm

The only problem is that he can only review phones that he gets his hands on, and it seems he has slowed down recently.

As for my recommendations - I'm not a fan of Samsungs in general. If durability is a big concern, then stay away from the Nokia 5200 or 5300. My brother's 5300 only lasted a couple of months and he was pretty gentle with it. Also, I used to use a few different Motorolas years ago and they were as solid as a rock. The Nokia 1208 seems like it's pretty solid as well. Ease of texting? Then get a phone with real keys, and not virtual ones like the iPhone, the HTC Touch, or the Samsung Instinct.

Since data is not available (at least currently), I would think that what we should look for in a good GSM phone is sound quality, durability, ease of texting, a decent camera...etc. I've read that Motorola is excellent for sound quality and Sony Erickson are excellent overall. Any thoughts / recommendations on specific manufacturers and model numbers?

Thanks.
