From other sources, I heard you have to drain the battery to zero a couple of times before you recharge it. I do that with batteries anyway.

You can usually get an external charger with 2 batteries for less than $20 on ebay. I would work on getting genuine batteries though. I do not have anything really nasty to say about the off brand batteries (except for "gold" batteries I got for my P930) they just tend to be about 90% as good as OEM for some reason.

Hey, glad you could not PM, not most optimal experience reading them.

I am a regular at redflagdeals also. I decided to go the eBay route to get my unlock code. I hear both setups work fine.

I had full intention of upgrading to KitKat, but Nova Launcher seems good enough for me. I will eventually root the phone to get rid of the Bell cruft. Apparently I have to email Huawei to unlock the bootloader, The website form setup is useless. I know I put in the right info. I might decide to use dc unlocker, vroot or whatever to save the hassle. Not a high priority, being the phone is pretty good as is.

BTW, nice tutorial. Thank you!

bridonca, I can't see a way to pm you on this forum, so I'll post the message here.

Perhaps you've already done some of this to your phone, but if not, here are some suggestions.

There is a lot of info on the Y300 on redflagdeals. A member of that forum, Infamouskid, will unlock you phone for US$5. Just send him a pm.

A simple thing you can do to improve the stock rom is to install Nova Launcher from the Playstore. The stock launcher is a bit clunky.

Myself, I wrote a summary for installing alternate firmware in post #99 at this link:

A lot of carriers use Huawei gear for their cell towers. Huawei is such a competitive threat, that the Americans now want to sanction Huawei. Huawei decided to get out of the US market. The rest of the world is good enough for them.

I also got my Ascend Y300 from Loblaws. $69, tax free sale, and $30 in store cards cost me $39 overall.

I like the phone. Camera is OK, screen is OK, GPS locks in quickly, battery is awesome, fastboot is amazing. Best deal out there by far!

I think Huawei is the one to watch. Their new phones are incredible bargains and well made. I and many others picked up the Ascend Y300 which was selling recently for as low as $50 at FS and BB. And it's a very impressive phone! And a fine compliment to Speakout. (However, I believe the Huawei model that Speakout is selling is not so impressive. And it's pricey.)

Don't forget that the iPhone is also Chinese made. I'm old enough to remember when everyone mocked products 'Made in Japan'.

After a year of using my Huawei Ascend g510 I’ve determined that China manufactory does offer not bad phone. The large screen gives a great experience while watching movies and playing games, however, the low battery life disappointed me a lot the battery life For my usage, it need to be recharged every night, but your mileage may vary. The best I’ve done is barely make it for 2 days with an aftermarket battery from mpj, including about 7 of those hours sleeping, That’s really good so far. About features that really affects the battery in a big way is games which can hammer my phone battery into the ground.

Otherwise, this phone is a affordable product addressed my needs.
