You should see your phone get a data connection and be able to browse the web. (If not, you might need to restart your phone for the APN to activate, which I needed to do)

This does not happen for me. No indication of a data connection ever appears, and I can't browse. I am using a Rogers HTC Magic. I've tried multiple Android ROMs and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Is there something I'm missing here?

Really, a smartphone is essential? These things didn't even exist until about 7 or 8 years ago, I don't know how that could be considered essential? People's priorities are really screwed up. I watch these trash TV shows like Judge Judy or Springer all the time and it always amazes me at the number of people that don't have a pot to piss in, yet they are carrying an iPhone or a Blackberry that is costing them at least $50 dollars a month to run. These people are on welfare! No, a smartphone is not a necessity, and its not a birth rite, its an expensive toy that you shouldn't have unless you can afford to operate it.

Good points all, kind of goes back to the really basic issue of being able to differentiate NEED from WANT, a simple thing that most people still can't do.

You said it yourself with the no brainer thing, most of Canada is not served in with these services, they are stuck a 3g and useless a little out of a major city and I am not a metrosexual yuppie that lives in condo in TO.

Also I get HSPA+ speeds on my phone where I live threw rogers, it is super super fast. And the 365 expiry allows me to leave my phone number good while i leave the country for a few months of year. Get it ?

iamdrumming, where is your sense of justice ? YOu don't think Rogers can be sued ? No wonder Canadians are ripped off so much everyday, we a nation of sheep.

Rogers wouldn't touch the last little dribbles of indy providers, they are already ripping off most Canadians in a million ways, they wouldn't risk that kind of crap.

They rent service to Zitar mobile (or whatever it is called) they don't care what happens after that.

And who are you buddy to say what speakout was invented for ?

It was more like a few guys deciding to try to get in on the mobile market like they do everyday all over the world and they talked to Petro Canada and 711, similar to what they do all over the world, rented some service off rogers (that rogers can't cancel anymore than Alberta can cancel a mining co from China) and tried to see if they could get some market share and gave up when they realized this was corrupt system in Canada and they didn't bother, and moved on to better places in Asia or the USA.

In the end, who cares what they want out of this, I give them money and couldn't care what their stupid slogans are.

It is between each us and them, they want my money simple as that, and your point of view matters not to me.

As said elsewhere, SpeakOut isn't for everyone. It was designed as a low cost, low frills carrier. If someone needs all the bell and whistles in a wireless provider, there are better options.

why would they cancel unlimited browsing, they rent space of rogers and it is set up that way, Rogers can't pull the plug, they would get sued by the Zitar dudes for lost revenue.

The best they can do is play stupid and let us keep going as is, it is a win - win for us, rogers loses nothing.

there is no shortage of bandwidth in Canada, it wasn't very long ago internet was almost always unlimited, it was somethign they scammed us with to pretend there isn't "enough" so they could charge crazy rates.

Also you tax money has helped pay for the gear that it takes to get us internet.

But yes, I would have to switch away from SPeakout in a heartbeat, I can't even get email to SMS, use short codes and get unlimted calling.

I pay $35 a month, I could easily go elsewhere for a little more and at least have unlimited calling, really the only thing keeping me here is the 365 and the browsing.

I would think that SpeakOut themselves have very strong opinions about tethering, as quoted here:

"7-Eleven SpeakOut Wireless Unlimited web add on cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops or personal computers other than for the use of Wireless Synch."

If it goes rampant, and it looks like tethering (and other TOS-breaking activity) is being condoned on this site, then SpeakOut could shut us down quickly. It's that simple. They are watching us. Trust me when I say that. We have a good thing going. Why would we want to wreck it?

Hey, thanks for the post.

I for some reason can't get my new Nexus 4 to tether with my laptop, it worked before with my other android on i think GB, I am also using a mac and have the proxy settings in Firefox, and that works fine right now threw my blackberry as a bluetooth modem, but my new phone won't work.

I have the hotspot working on the phone with the build in tether app, ok, and i can connect to the wifi network on my mac but it shows no network activity. I have only ever had the proxy setting on the browser when using the android wifi hotspot (on a htc desire with gingerbread) not touching the system settings as firefox has the setting, i don't see where i could even change proxy setting for a wifi connection on a mac in the system settings, or if that would even help.

Of course for the blackberry i have a profile set up for the bluetooth connection in networks, it is working fine and i get nice but kind of slow 3g connection, but sick of switching sim cards back and forth to my new phone.

Not an expert with this, but not a total nooobie, but it has me stuck, the new nexus is working great with the proxy on that device, just the wifi tether won't work (could it be Jelly Bean or the Nexus for some reason?)

thanks guys, good luck getting your phones all up and working.
