I am using a Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (Vibrant) followed the recommendation of another SO forum user in the Settings and I am now working on 3G
I only need to check email when I am away from home and occasionally some browsing so I have not tried any of the other functions but I did read that there was only limited access to SO and other apps probably would not work! in any case I am happy that I can use the service as they intended! the other phone I had was the Nokia C-3 and as far as battery usage is concerned it was amazing! I only bought the power hungry Galaxy because I wanted something I could use as a E-reader on my trip back to Australia and wanted a phone that was unlocked when I arrived in Sydney something that I could just pop my old sim card in from Australia and use! I will post the settings again for those that need them:
Use settings:
Name: Speak Out
APN: goam.com
Proxy: 10.128.1.69
Port: 80
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
MMSC: http:/mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Authentication type: None
APN type: Internet + mms
Note that originally I could not get the settings to work but after some trials and finding these settings and a reboot they now work fine I had also asked SO to reset my phone IDK if that helped!

What optimization you have done to make it lock that fast ? My Ace behaves exactly like the Gio

Hi Netyang. Where can you get an Ace for $50? Other than GPS do you think Ace is superior to GIO?

Ace is the best choice. just for $50 bucks, no one can beat it. after optimize, the GPS can lock the signal about 10 to 20 seconds. This is the fastest GPS on phone.

when I say GPS is slow to lock, I mean GPS, not A-GPS. If you have data plan(and configure gps.conf), locking is not a issue.

my LG Shine Plus OTOH can lock super quick, not in A-GPS but pure GPS. I don't know why.

Ace is better on the spec but I find the font to be fuzzier and the glass is hard to clean.

I haven't used a stand alone unit but once it is locked, it is fine. I just need to cache the map(as I don't have active data plan) and it gives me turn by turn(walking though as I hate driving). When on a bus, it tracks the location as it should.

Those are probably the best phones price and feature wise. You can pay more for a better screen and faster CPU, more memory, and flash support, but for the most part, what these phones offer are all that you need. The GIO in particular has everything you need. I am heavily biased against LG, but the Chic looks to be a nice phone.

I'm looking at a Galaxy GIO for 129.95 unlocked or an LG Chic for 99.95 unlocked. Can anyone suggest a better phone / better deal? I will want to use Gmail, videos and stills and some web browsing and if possible GPS.
